She was the daughter of the late Ruth Masters Wendel and wife of the late Robert James Davis, who died in 1974. She was also preceded in death by her son, Thomas G. Nell Rogers Davis Davis, in 1998. Nell was a 1943 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School.

Through frequent correspondence, monthly meetings and yearly reunions, members of this class have remained a vital part of her life for 60 years. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and more recently attended Covenant Community United Methodist Church. Her passion was her family and serving others. She gave many hours of service as a volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital some years ago.

In recent years, she was a member of the Shrine Auxiliary and became a VIP at the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, which she dearly loved. She was an active member and faithful servant of the Mountain Top and Blue Ridge Emmaus Communities. Surviving are her daughter, Judy Roach and son-in-law, Leon Roach, of Fairview; daughter-in-law, Rita Davis of Nashville; grandchildren, Amanda Roach, Carson Roach, Thomas and Kathleen Davis, Tara and Jeffrey Leurs; and great grandchild, Caitlin Davis. Also surviving are her cousin, Charles Masters and his wife, Nancy, of St. Petersburg, and their family.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Riverside Cemetery in Asheville. A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Covenant Community United Methodist Church, 1 1 Rocket Drive, Asheville. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O.

He retired from B.F. Goodrich Tire and then was employed with Bell Tone Hearing Aid. He was a member of William L. Ashe Calvary Baptist Church in Hendersonville and a former member and deacon of Westwood Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War.

He was a son of the late Houston and Rixie Ensley Ashe. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Geneva Smith, Lucille Evans and Irene Marsh. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Elliott Ashe of the home; sons, Terry Ashe and his wife. Donna, of Knoxville, and Bruce Ashe and his wife, Sharon, of Hendersonville; stepson, Richard Bell of Candler; stepdaughter, Marsha Lynch and her husband, Lloyd, of Candler; grandchildren, Eric Ashe, Amanda Bryant, Graham Ashe and Price Ashe; stepgrandchil-dren, Jeff Bell, Tina Bartell, Matthew Lynch and Chris and Bryan Carpenter; and great-granddaughters, Alleah and Chloe Bryant. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.

Vols Davis EDNA LORAINE KURETSCH ASHEVILLE Edna Loraine Kurelsch, 76, formerly of Goldsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at the Hospice Solace Center in Asheville. Mrs. Kuretsch had been a resident of Asheville Manor in Asheville since August 2002. Mrs.

Kuretsch was born in Swansboro to the late Herbert L. Ward and Thelma L. Ward and was the widow of Richard Kuretsch Sr. Ms. Kuretsch loved children and ran a day-care center until she retired in 1994.

She will be fondly remembered by those who knew her as a sweet, kind and loving person. She will be missed by all. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Patetown Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Sasser officiating.

She is survived by her daughters, Karan Kuretsch of Asheville and Loraine Forrest of Durham; her grandchildren, Chris Brown of Columbia, S.C., Christy Forrest Krupinski of Durham and Mark Forrest of Clayton; her great-grandchildren, Dalton Forrest, Allen Forrest and Dean Forrest, all of Clayton; and her sisters, Margaret Griffin of LaPlata, and Eleanor Tanner of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Kuretsch Jr. and her sisters, Ruth Lockhart and Lila Gibson. Her family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Asheville Manor for their caring and support. Also, much appreciation is given to Mountain Area Hospice for their care, kindness and support.

St. Matthews UMC 11a.m. Bills' Creek Baptist MARY BARTLETT BROWNELL MARION Mrs. Mary Bartlett Brownell, 73, of Marion, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Mission St Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

A native of McDowell County, she was born Dec. 13, 1929, to the late Samuel David Pyatt and Maude Vess Pyatt. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marion and was in the church choir. She was Maty B. Brownell retired as the practice manager of the Asheville Bone and Joint Clinic and was an active member and past president (1979-80) of the North Carolina Association of Clinic Managers.

Her many activities in the Marion area include membership in the McDowell Hospital Auxiliary, the Tea Cup Garden Club, the Sweet Adelines and the Marion Literary Revue. A very creative lady, she found many avenues of expression for her talents. Her first husband, Virgil L. Bob Bartlett, preceded her in death. Surviving are her son, Tim Bartlett and his wife, Lora; a brother, Everett Pyatt; two sisters, Ruby Powell and Betty Lunsford; and a granddaughter, Meaghan Nicole Bartlett, all of Marion.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Marion with Dr. Robert R. Davis and the Rev. Scott Hagaman officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Westmoreland Funeral Home. Burial will be In McDowell Memorial Park. LARRY G0MER COOK FRANKLIN Larry Gomer Cook, 49, of Georgia Road in Franklin, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of Louise Morgan Cook of Franklin and the late Jack Cook. He worked at Angel Hospital for 26 years and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Eddie Trull, Eddie Stillwell and Josh Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. JUNE RUSSELL MILLER MARION June Russell Miller, 87, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003. Funeral services will be at 1 1 a.m. Saturday in Westmoreland Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment will be In Cross Memorial Park. Born in Salisbury, he had lived in Henderson County most of his life. He was a son of the late J.A. Rusher, chairman of the Henderson County Commissioners during the Great Depression and one of Henderson County's largest Jake A. Rusher pj, landowners, and Cora 'li'U, Plummer Rusher.

HiSS Mr. Rusher was the owner of the Royal Pines Swimming Pool, the Pines Club and the Pines Recreation Center and Skateboard Park for more than 50 years. The Pines Club was known as the most popular place among young college and high school kids in Western North Carolina in the golden years of the 1940s through the 1980s. It was home to such performers as The Supremes, the Isley Brothers, Drifters, Coasters, Bo Diddley and many other stars. In 1999, he donated to the city of Asheville, through a Charitable Remainder Trust, The Royal Pines Park, The Pines Pool and Skateboard Park.

Over the years and after the Asheville Regional Airport was built, he owned and operated the former Asheville-Hendersonville Airport, which became the ASH Airport Raceways, one of the nation's largest drag strips. He also owned the Weeping Willow Swimming Pool in Hendersonville after World War II, which was Hendersonviile's only swimming pool. In the 1960s, he owned the former Jade Club in Asheville. He served as a chief petty officer with the Navy for four years, during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans under Admirals Bill Halsey and Chester Nimilz. Survivors include his brother, Sam Rusher of Hendersonville, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Carl C. McKenzie officiating.

Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Thos. Shepherd 8. Son Funeral Directors.

Morgan and Annie B. Morgan. He was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. MAEBELLE SAWYER ROBBINSVILLE Maebelle Sawyer, 92, of Robbinsville passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Britthaven of Graham. She was a native of Graham County and a daughter of the late George and Julia Campbell Huscusson. Her husband, Clinton Sawyer, proceeded her in death. She is survived by her son and his wife, Maurice and Josephine Sawyer of Robbinsville; her daughter and her husband, Ramona and Tommy Smith of Heflin, brother, E.J.

Huscusson of Beckley, W.Va.; and sisters, Hollis Riddle of Orange Park, and Louise Huscusson Stewart of Robbinsville. She has a granddaughter, two grandsons, two great-granddaughters, a great-grandson, a great-great-grandson and a great-great-granddaughter.
