"Beverly Hills Cop II" (Paramount) 10. "Pink Floyd: The Wall" (MGM-UA) By TINA HILTON Staff Writer Dorothy Hart had it all beauty, talent, intelligence, fame and fortune. But she also had another gift, one so powerful that it forced her to give up modeling in New York and a thriving movie career in Hollywood. "It's called a conscience," Hart said recently from her stylish home on Asheville's Martindale Drive. "With everything that I had, it just wasn't enough.

I wanted to do more, give more. I wanted to dp something helpful for the human race. I know that sounds corny, but it is true." Hart's storybook career began in 1945 when she moved from the Cleveland area to New York after graduating with honors from Western Reserve University. She had just won the "National Cinderella Cover Girl" contest, sponsored by Columbia Pictures, beating out some 120,000 other contestants. As part of the prize, Hart was awarded a modeling contract with Harry Conover and her photographs soon began appearing in fashionable magazines all over the world.

Columbia Pictures also offered a movie contract, but Hart flatly refused the deal because she didn't think she was "ready." "I wanted more training," Hart said. "ActuaUy I was more interested in performing on Broadway. The timing just wasn't right." "I Was A Communist For The FBI" with Frank Lovejoy. But just as she was entering the charmed circle of superstars, Hart decided something was missing from her life. So she packed her makeup case and awards and moved back to New York, determined to fill the void.

That was in 1952. Hart had jusi won the "Photoplay Gold Key Award" as one of moviedom's 10 best young actresses. "It still wasn't enough," she said. "I felt some of the movies were mediocre and that I was contributing to that mediocrity. I wanted to do something important, really important with my Ufe so I started working with the American Association for the United Nations." Hart was the first female entertainer in the country to work for the volunteer organization, which tries to promote the United Nations in this country.

Hart even was featured as a frequent guest speaker for the United Nations. And, she was appointed observer for the United States delegation at the Geneva meeting of the World Federation of United Nations in 1957-58. She also dabbled in television, appearing on "Omnibus" with Burgess Meredith, "Four Star Playhouse" with Charles Boyer, "Medallion Theatre" with RonaM Reagan and panel shows including "Take A Guess" and "I've Got A Secret." Of Reagan, Hart recalled: "I thought he was a very nice person. But if anybody had told me he would be president of the nited States one day, I would have giggled." While the cameras continued rolling, the United Nations remained an important part of her life. "It was very, very fulfilling," she said.

"I'll never regret having given up Hollywood for it." The wheels of change also continued to roll for Hart. In 1954 she married and seven years later gave birth to a son, Douglas. In 1964, Hart split up with her husband and was faced with raising a son alone in New York. The idea worried her. "It was a hard choice, but I didn't want Douglas growing up in New York," she said.

"I knew I would have to work all the time to be able to support him and didn't want him to grow up without me. "So I moved to Asheville and gave it all up my wprk at the U.N., my TV work, my hostess work, everything. I decided there would be no more 'Dorothy Hart, the I would become 'Dorothy Hart, the mother of I decided Douglas would be the star. "I have no regrets. It would have been very bad for Douglas to grow up in the New York environment." Hart chose Asheville because her parents (now dead) lived here.

But she quickly fell in love with the region and decided to remain. Douglas is now married and has a child of his own. Hart recently became a grandmother when his daughter, Nicole Elise, was born. For now, the youthful-looking Hart, who turned 66 most of her days working in her rose garden, writing poetry or painting portraits for friends. She hopes to one day return to the big screen.

"It's been a very interesting life," she said. "The worst part of it is now that everybody is gone." VIDEOCASSETTE RENTALS 1 Hills Cop II" (Paramount) 2. "Stakeout" (Touchstone) 3. "Dirty Dancing" (Vestron) 4. "The Lost Boys" (Warner) 5.
