Alfred "Al" Royden Phillips, 84, of 1617 Hendersonville Road, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center. A native of New York, he had lived at Lake Junaluska and Waynesville with his wife, Lucille, and they just celebrated their 60th anniversary. He was the son of the late Frederic R. and Irene Golder Phillips.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille Medford Phillips of the home; their children, Nanette Edwards and her husband, Ron, of Rutherfordton, Jef- frey Phillips and Buffy Phillips Messer both 01 Waynesville; six grandchildren, Tyson Edwards and wife Candice of Mooresboro, Keaton Edwards of New York, Jake Messer and his wife, Denise, of Waynesville, Molly Messer of Waynesville; two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Sullivan Edwards of Mooresboro. He was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Syracuse University, and a WW Veteran, after retirement as a chemical engineer at Dayco; he loved the great outdoors and volunteered hundreds of hours in the community and especially in National Parks, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains, Alaska and Yellowstone. He was one of the first to begin working on the Mountains to the Sea Trail. He was a wonderful husband and father and grandfather. He loved the great outdoors, loved animals and especially feeding the birds.
