1 a.m. (8)(13) Tomorrow Psychologists Dr. Joseph Hart and Dr. Richard Cor-riere, co-authors of "Going Movies Allen is great with action, as he showed in "Towering Inferno," but this mechanistic, predictable movie was hardly the exciting spectacle the advance publicity led us to believe. At this point, Allen is not scheduled to return to Oregon, but has already been engaged by NBC to do "The Night the Bridge Collapsed," and "Hanging By a Thread," about a cable car collapse, for next season.

Juding by "Fire" and "Flood," which he did in Oregon last year, he can only get better. Still to come from the last several months of movie production in Oregon are "First Love," made in Portland, and "The Last Warrior," which Saul Zaentz made in Portland, Mount Hood and Warm Springs locales. Both are full scale feature films, with the latter set for fall release. Several films are still pending as possibilities for Oregon location work this year, but at this point the movie business looks as dry as the weather business. That may not be all to the bad if all we get for it is money and a feeling of embarrassment.

NBC's title, filmed in Oregon in December and aired on NBC May 8. Both were produced by Warner Brothers. The highlight of the first feature was seeing a lovely, talented actress, Joan Hackett, spit nails at James Farentino, then bathe him in a belch of bile. Yecch! THE STORY WAS BARELY decipherable, but apparently Farentino was a defrocked priest who. was killed in an auto accident, after a spell of debauchery, but was brought back to life miraculously to expiate his sins by rooting out evil.

This is a pilot for series, unfortunately. In this outing Miss Hackett was the headmistress of a girls' school visited with devilish fires and, in the dramatic climax, turned hollow-eyed and white of face. I can hardly blame her, since this potboiler was obviously raced through production so fast that no one bothered to catch a breath. It's easy to see why Reed College insisted" as its part of the deal (no dirty hands for those fellows) that the school be left out of any publicity. NO SUCH LUCK for "Fire," which ended with a word of thanks to Gov.

Straub and the state of Oregon for the plentiful cooperation. "Fire" at least had its merits, mainly the financial largesse of the production (they dropped $1 million in Oregon) and an attention to spectacle. The attention obviously wasn't to the acting or the plot, which was thinly molded around efforts to elicit thrills and drain every drop of suspense. Filming was done in Yamhill County, near the Flying Ranch, and at Silverton, which was named in the plot. But even though you could identify the locales, it was almost impossible to follow the course of the forest fire allegedly raging through the mountains (in spite of the damp fog and muddy roads).

The biggest thrill was the end, where, just as things looked bleakest, a man showed up to proclaim "The fire is under control." Oh yes. The plot made Ernest Borgnine, more bug-eyed than usual, the boyfriend of resort owner Vera Miles, with Patty Duke Astin and Alex Cord as a doctor team whose marriage was on the rocks. There was also an assortment of lesser characters, such as Neville Brand as the rather billious looking convict who set the fire. The action was hardly more credible a school girl lost in the fiery woods, a little boy who refuses to leave his fire-endangered room and a bundle of stars caught in the lodge. Only the fire itself and some of the stuntwork, particularly a spectacular shot of a fiery man falling from a tree, had substantial merit.
