The Oregon Statesmen, Salem, Tuesday, May 29, 1979, 7B entertainment 'Battlestar Galactica' is at the Mall VVv My Skydivers qualify for national test SHERIDAN Skydiving teams from Athol, Idaho, Snohomish and Kennewick, qualified for a national competition at the Pacific Parachute Center during the holiday weekend. The nationals will be held at Richmond, Ind. beginning June 22. The teams qualified in sequential relative work which involved doing different maneuvers while free-falling at 125 miles per hour. Eight women received a women's Star Crest Recipient Award for forming a star while free-falling.

Seven of the women were local jumpers; the eighth is a Richland, resident. Brisk winds cancelled the men's canopy stack competition and some injured wrists and ankles were reported. Present were 175 registered jumpers from Washington, Oregon, Montana, California, British Columbia and ets devastated by the murderous Cylons, a mechanical civilization dedicated to destroying human life. With only one huge "battlestar" ship left, that one the Galactica commanded by Lome Greene, a flotilla of 220 space ships is formed to seek out a new home for man this time the ancestral planet of earth. When the Galactica fleet stops for fuel and food at a strange planet run by antlike Ovions, they find a casino resort with mystifying secrets which result in a violent conclusion.

"Star Wars" has nothing to fear from all this. In spite of its splendid visuals, "Battlestar Galactica" emerges as just another space cruiser without the spark to shoot across the cinema heavens. rfl-iiiiMViiniiiMM 1 Michael Hart and his Society Syn- Sports Saloon, 4799 Portland Road copaters, shown in their hometown of NE, Thursday. Hours will be 8 pjn. to Edinburgh, Scotland, will bring their midnight Dixieland sound in kilts to Schwartz's 4 i 1 I The opening was impressive, but the series eventually shorn of Dykstra's production, floundered and fizzled as it became more a soap opera than a space opera.

Now the "Battlestar Galactica" premiere episode, trimmed from three to two hours and outfitted with "Sensur-round" sound, has been theatrically released to recoup production costs. IT STILL has its joys and its faults and the trimming seems to have reduced none of them. Nothing, by the way, has been added. It's a show for people fond of escapist journeys through vast starfields and glittering hardware, flashing lasers and encounters with malevolent metal monsters: Great to look at, bearable to listen to and absolutely nothing to think about. The pleasures, in short, are still mainly visual and now amplified to the big screen where they really belonged.

Dykstra, who worked nine months on this show, creates some marvelous effects of ponderous space ships moving epochally through space, with dog fights between fighters, eerie space effects and handsomely organized action sequences. But the acting, mostly by television talent, tends to the wooden and amateurish, and the shallow script and pedestrian direction do little more to keep our minds occupied between special effects. EVEN WITH NEEDED TRIMMING, the film still falters as a narrative in its second half, but wraps everything up with a slam-bang conclusion. South Africa.
