Buena Jockson Evans I write this for those people who knew her and yet did not know her, but for some vague reason will miss her presence with us on this material plane of the earth. If you knew her at all you had to marvel at her existence. Frugality was a prime virtue to her. However she bore no HI feelings to those who were extravagantly wasteful. She was perhaps more aware of her eccentricity than those around her.

if that is possible. She bore witness to the fact that it is better to light one little candle than to curse the darkness. She bore her full share of the property tax load until this last year, even though her income was far below welfare standards. She refused all help saying she was not a pauper. She was very gentle with people while being very strict with herself.

She had a forgiving understanding of other people's limitations. When the city ordered her wood shed and tool shed removed at her expense, not even allowing her to keep the wood to burn in her wood stove, the workmen were apologetic. She told them they were merely doing their job and set about to help them in whatever way she could to facilitate their task. She was an organic gardner planting by the moon, although she knew nothing of Astrology. She accepted the neighbors grass clippings in exchange for garden produce.

She greatly appreciated whatever material they provided her to burn in her wood stove. She cultivated the hated blackberry vines which yielded the much loved fruit. She did not allow them to grow wild taking over the place, but kept them trimmed and contained making them more fruitful. Although her independence made her difficult to help she never became a burden to anyone. All she asked or seemed to need was the freedom to live her own ideals which she also granted to those around her.

I am sure the more any of you knew her the more you appreciated her serenity and peace. I knew her wealth of spirit to be of greater value than any wealth the world has ever known. She did not gain this wealth of spirit easily and naturally. She came by it the hard way and at great cost. This world may have been relatively unaware of her presence but she lit at least a few-tiny candles.

The world would be a better place if all of us would do as well with what we understand in the corner where we find ourselves. Most of us error by trying to do more than it is any of our business to do. Micah 6th Chapter 8th Verse: "He hath shewed thee, man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" To those friends and neighbors who contributed in any measure to her freedom to live the way she could see to live I offer my undying gratitude and appreciation. Sincerely, Esther V. Leinbach 1950 Orchard Street Eugene, Oregon Herman U.
