Statesman, Solem, Sun. Mar. 5, '72 (Sec. il 1 Pentacle Review Chess Match Sites Picked 'Rashomon' Tale Offers An Exciting Evening in Belgrade no later tharf July 1. Spassky had picked Reykjavik as his first choice-Fischer had selected Belgrade because it had made' the top money offer of $152,000 to host the match.

Hie Soviet news agency Tass reported that the Soviet federation said in the letter it is "ready, in principle, to discuss conducting the first half of the match in Belgrade and the second half in Belgrade is in Yugoslavia and Reykjavik is in Iceland. The Russians had said Spassky, the defending champion, had objected to playing all the games in a European city with a hot climate in summer. In their letter the Russians said the games should begin Sunday, March 3 thru Tmtday, MOSCOW (AP) The Russian Chess Federation indicated Saturday it would agree to two sites for the world championship chess match between Bobby Fischer of the United States and the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky. The indication came in a letter which the Russian federation handed to Dr. Max Euwe, president of the International Chess Federation.

Euwe come to Moscow to try to break an impasse over the location for the championship match. Costuming is superior.

So is lighting, diction and dancing! Every movement on the cleverly contrived three -part stage is effective. But for sheer delight, we and probably the rest of the sparse first-night attendance will take Barbara Phillips' writhing performance as the Medium. James Hogg, as the samurai-husband-corpse, joins Folk in breathtaking swordplay. And Folk's braggart-stance as he boasts of his prowess with women, his lack of respect for life, provides a picture almost any painter would like to record against the effective bamboo curtain background. The play is full of pictures.

Among them we recall with special pleasure the gray-haired mother (Cynthia Lee), kitchen-maid in the house of the warrior, presenting her grief-stricken daughter to the court, and the deputy (William Cutler), stem and respectful with his bamboo banner. Always effective, too, is the scene at the decaying Rashomon Gate where the discouraged but eloquent priest (William M. Harris,) the redheaded, corpse-robbing wigmaker (Richard Ernst) and the tale-telling woodcutter (Harmon Barasch) sit around their tiny fire discussing the trial. Then, there is that final, surprising and gentle picture at the conclusion. This was our first exposure to this really great story by Ryunosuke.

It opened as a play in New York in 1959 with Rod Steig-er and Claire Bloom. The Japanese movie version is said to be perhaps the best-known film to emerge from that country. The American movie, entitled "The Outrage," also starred Claire Bloom with Paul Newman as the bandit. We'd hazard a guess that those who have seen it elsewhere won't be disappointed with Pentacle's production. Curtain time, nightly through Saturday, is 8:15.

Tickets are available at Stevens Son and at the door if not previously sold out. Student Honors Two Mid-Willamette Valley students at Goshen College, Goshen, earned places on the fall term honor roll. They are LaVelle Byers, Salem, and Rosemary Kropf, Albany. SAV CoiTieS Early (SEATTLE, Wash.) Tracy Davidson holds her day-old daughter in a Seattle hospital Friday after the infant was delivered on the ferry between Vashon Island and Seattle. Mrs.

Davidson and her husband, John, were aboard the ferry, Kalee-tan, trying to beat the stork when Mrs. Davidson gave birth. Burke Dennis, first mate on the ferry, delivered the baby. (AP) By ISABEL ROSEB8AUGH Staff Writer, The Statesman Fast-moving, colorful and well -produced, "Rashomon," at Pentacle Theatre all this week, is an evening of exciting and thought-provoking entertainment. Who killed the samurai? Each viewer is judge and jury.

As testifying characters present their evidence, the scene of the death in the forest is re-enacted, each time from a different viewpoint. Barbara Davis, as the flowerhke Japanese wife of the warrior who is slain, would steal the show if the rest of the cast were not so strong. Her every appearance reveals a new facet of her dramatic abilities, and this play includes several of these revelations. A scar across the left cheek of realistic bandit Dick Folk is not makeup it actually is from a sword wound! One of the weapons broke during dress rehearsal (witnessed by 100 thrilled kids from Hillcrest and Chemawa Schools) and ready Richard played out that evening with blood streaming down his face and neck.
