Riordon said he is insisting on the same format as the Laver match, with a $100,000 purse, winner take all.

"I'm afraid a $250,000 purse would only turn people off," Riordon said. "I've seen it in golf. Those half-million dollar purses. They usually are flops." Connors said he was leaving the matter entirely up to his manager. "Sure, I would like to play Newcombe," he said.

"I've never beaten him. He beat me twice in tournaments and once in a one-set World NEW YORK (AP) Jimmy Connors, honored as Tennis Player of the Year, pondered a proposed $250,000 head-to-head match with John Newcombe Monday and promised to change his court behavior. "I will tape my mouth, keep my hands in my pockets and not use any four letter words," the 22-year-old court rebel said after receiving the Martini and Rossi gold racket as the world's No. 1 player. Earlier, his manager, Bill Riordon, had announced that plans for an April 26 date against Newcombe in Las dent women's school outside of Philadelphia the reputation as the UCLA of women's basketball.

"Right now, she said, "Immaculata has it so that every girl says to herself, 'I'd really like to play for the national champion. We're in a unique position. Immaculata's reputation is such that so many girls want to come here. "We just stay home and hand out the admissions forms." Queens, a division of the City University of New York, has only moderate tuition fees but no Vegas had temporarily collapsed in a dispute over prize money. The challenge match was planned for Caesar's Palace, where Connors earlier this year scored a four-set victory over 36-year-old Rod Layer in a $100,000 winner-take-all match between left-handed super stars, past and present.

"We haven't agreed on point one yet," said Riordon, who acknowledged that he had been in conference all morning with representatives of Caesar's Palace and Newcombe. Newcombe reportedly wants a divided by flopping over the crossbar at 7 feet 5 inches on his second attempt during the U.S. Olympic Invitation meet at the Garden. "I didn't work out at all last week because of the flu," said the outspoken Cal-ifornian, who also holds the outdoor record. "I plan to train hard this week, and I have the potential to jump 7-6 on Friday, but I'll save it if they make any changes.

I don't think the people at the garden will like that, but I'll let them know why it has to be that way." Stones's threat came after he was informed about plans to reconsider the layout for the high jump at the Nationals. The angle and position of the pit on the Garden floor were shifted for the If A tQ li 7 bAti 11 i Team Tennis match. But I'm not straining at the bit. "If we play and he wins, okay. He may be No.

1 for 1975, just as I am No. 1 for 1974. So I may be No. 1 again in 1976. It isn't worth fretting over." It was a subdued, cooperative Connors who flew to New York from another victory at Boca Raton, to accept the plaudits of the tennis hierarchy and leading personalities.

Gene Scott, recalling the 1974 Wimbledon and Forest Hills tournaments, said, "In all the thousands watching the finals against Ken Rose-wall, there were only three people who wanted Jimmy to win Jimmy, his mother Gloria and Riordon. "All the players were against him because they thought he was suing them," Scott added. "It took a lot of spunk to go out and win under those conditions." Jimmy reiterated that his romance with Chris Evert, the Wimbledon and U. S. women's champion, had been resparked on his weekend appearance at Boca Raton, near Chris' Fort Lauderdale home.

"It's true that four months ago we decided to go our separate ways," he said, "but now I would describe our relationship as very good. It's much better than it was when it was great." Gators Stun Kentucky GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Sharpshooter Gene Shy and the Florida Gators tied 4th-ranked Kentucky into knots Monday night with a tight defense in the first half and a slowdown offense in the final eight minutes, upsetting the Wildcats 66-58. The loss knocked Kentucky out of a tie with Alabama for the Southestern Conference lead and was the second upset in two weeks for the Wildcats. Shy had a hot hand that helped Florida stay in front most of the way.

He led the Gators with 20 points, 18 of them in the first half. He also played a major role in the sticky defense which befuddled the bigger Kentucky five. Fitzsimons Ranks 7th WASHINGTON (AP) Unheralded Pat Fitzsimons' victory Sunday in the Glen Campbell-Los Angeles Open golf tournament vaulted him from 28th to seventh place on the year's money-winning list according to figures released Monday by the Professional Golf Association's Tournament Players Division. Fitzsimons picked up for his victory to boost his earnings for the season to $41,690. Johnny Miller continued to lead the list.

Miller tied for 15th in Los Angeles, pocketed $2,325 and now has $113,120 on the year. Gene Littler is a distant second with $53,821, followed by Gary Groh with $49,473, John Mahaffey with 47,621 and J. C. Snead with Rounding out the top ten, in order, are Tom Kite, Fitzsimons, Al Geiberger, Tom Watson and Jerry Heard. "We're happy we drew enough fans in 1974 so we can handle it." The Dodgers maintain a strict policy against announcing salary figures but it was learned their established policy against contracts for more than one year has been broken. Both relief ace Mike Marshall and starter Don Sutton, a 19- game winner last season, have two-year contracts now. Indications are the payroll costs for the Dodgers have risen at least 25 per cent. Third baseman Ron Cey was the only Dodger to take his pay problems to arbitration. Arbitrator Fred J.

Holly of Knoxville, upheld the player's demand for $56,000. Cey, who became a regular in 1973, had made $27,000 last season and the Dodgers had offered $47,000. Steve Garvey, the National League's most valuable player of 1974, signed for a reported $90,000, another in the big-boost group. Girls Basketball At Central 28, Cascade 60. They'd just as soon avoid the myriad of mistakes made by their male counterparts, thank you. With the recent introduction of athletic scholarships for women, a pandora's box has been opened, one which many women's basketball officials are very wary of as their sport grows by leaps and bounds. "Women are getting into recruiting now, although it's not as high pressured as the men," said Lucille Kyvallos, the dynamic coach of Queen College's nationally prominent women's basketball team. "But when you have scholarships, there might be pressure in future years. "Women have to try and avoid the mistakes made by men.

Many women didn't want to get into the scholarship bag. We didn't want to get in, but now we're forced in and we've got to be careful." Cathy Rush, coach of three-time national champion Immaculata, which defeated Queens 65-61 Saturday before an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 12,000 at Madison Square Garden, agreed on the need for caution. "Where there are scholarships, there is going to be recruiting going on," Mrs. Rush said. "Without good regulations, women's basketball could fall prey to the men's problems.

But women have seen what happened to the men that could be the best thing going for us." While some schools give athletic scholarships to women, Immaculata and Queens do not. And the scholarships are already having their effect. Immaculata is 14-2 this season, and both losses came to schools which offer scholarshipsWilliam Penn and Federal City. Can the non-scholarship schools continue to compete? "I think we can, but it will be much harder," said Mrs. Rush, whose 88-6 record at Immaculata has earned that tiny, 525- stu- to Avoid Material Price Increases FREE ESTIMATES All Types New and Re-Roof Ph.

"If it isn't the way it was at the Olympic meet last Friday night," the 21 -year-eld Stones said by phone from Los Angeles, "I won't go for the world record. I will stop at what it takes to win." A women's high-jump competition also will be held at the A.A.U. meet.

The defending champion is Joni Huntley, the only American woman to jump six feet, who also has adopted the flopping style first introduced by Dick Fos-bury. Dr. Leroy T. Walker, chairman of the games committee for the meet said no single official or athlete, would decide how the high jump would be staged. "This is the purpose of the games committee," Walker said by phone from Surham, N.C.

"We'll try to look at the total floor and do what's best for the greatest numbers." Of the eight leading men in the A.A.U. high-jump field, six are floppers, including Tom Woods, the defending champion. New Hampshire is one example quite new on the scene. Unable to restore runs of Atlantic salmon to its streams because the fish are environmentally exacting the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department planted some 100,000 coho smolts in the Lamprey and Exeter rivers which both open into the Great Bay Estuary of the Piscataqua river some 15 miles from the ocean. The stocking took place the first time in April of 1967. Before long coho salmon were being observed in the ocean all the way from northern Massachusetts to southern Maine Sport harvesting tallies on coho salmon have been very small compared to the annual results we tick off here in the Pacific Northwest or in Oregon but it must be remembered that the nor'easterners are now enjoying some salmonic fishing where such had been missing ever since their Atlantic salmon runs dwindled out to nothing.

New Hampshire plans to use the coho as an interim until Atlantic salmon runs can be started again and they have hope this will be possible. But, they may find that many anglers will care less about the Atlantic salmon after a few season's sampling of the sciyppy, fine tasting echo If you're looking for a better way to get your intercity business travel done, see us.
