Pictured, front left, are Rill Anderson, Diane Lickteig, Patty Wassmund, Jimmy Brenner, Miss Gallagher and Brenda Brenner, Rainbow president. Get First-Hand Report On Irish By LINDA WASMUND "Teenage marriages are rare in Ireland," said Marie Gallagher from Dublin, Ireland, who talked at a reception in her honor given by Rainbow 4-H Club Saturday night. Miss Gallagher, who is the national associate director of Macra Na Tuaithe organization in Ireland, is here to observe the 4-H program in the United States.

Macra Na Tuaithe is a youth club patterned after our 4-H clubs. Sharing the honors with Miss Gallagher at the reception was the club's community leader, Mrs. Rayond Houston Lane, who within the last three weeks has visited headquarters of 4-H clubs in Germany and Ireland. Mrs. Houston spent four days at Macra Na Tuaithe offices in Dublin and visited in homes of members with whom Rainbow 4- H'ers have been corresponding the past three years.

The population is about 95 per cent Catholic and the country is mostly agricultural with farms averaging 40 acres. Ireland is smaller than Kansas and has more people.

The educational system is quite different from ours. The secondary schools are not co-educational and are mostly parochial campus-type schools. The Irish language, Gaelic, is taught in all schools, but English is the spoken language. Miss Gallagher hopes to take many of our 4-H practices back to Ireland to be put into use there. She is especially impressed with the cooperation of parents in 4-H work.
