But, he said in a television interview, less important factors are complicating the issue. Smith spoke after the departure for London of Sir Morrice James, the British official who flew to Salisbury with Britain's final six terms for settlement. The prime minister declared the end of the road was in sight because the British now had set a deadline and he felt if Britain "throws in the sponge and goes to the United Nations" Rhodesia must almost certainly declare itself a republic.

Big Barge Beached By Storm SEATTLE (AP) The big Seattle petroleum barge Lumberjack was aground off the British Columbia coast Thursday and her owners feared she might be a total loss. The barge was driven ashore in Milbank Sound, 430 miles north of here, as she was being towed south from a season of helping resupply remote U. S. defense posts in the Aleutian Islands and the Arctic. 100 MPH Winds Hit The Lumberback was in tow of the tug Monarch when she encountered 100 mile an hour winds.

The Monarch was standing by offshore. Salvage men were unable to assess the full damage or determine whether the 272-foot long barge could be pulled off the rocky beach. The Lumberjack was reported apparently holed forward but still afloat at the stern. The United Transportation owners of the Lumberjack, estimated her value at about $650,000. Storm One of Series Storms that beached the Lumberjack were part of a series that have lashed the North Pacific the past week.

The Coast Guard here said the Wren a 53-foot combination fishing boat, was sunk off Kodi-ak as she sailed home with a cargo of king crab. Her owner, Richard Wamser, 31, Kodiak, and a crewman, George Gatter, 23, were rescued from a raft by the Coast Guard. One Group GIRL'S FAMOUS NAME TENNIS SHOES set a production record and expects to exceed that shortly, a Kennewick power official said Thursday. Owen Hurd, managing director of the Washington Public Power Supply System which built the $97 million plant, said it established a record for nuclear plants in the United States by producing 257.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity in September. Expected to Double The plant Thursday was turning out 430,000 kilowatts, about half of what it will do when the Bonneville Power Administration installs new transformers later this winter, Hurd said.

BPA distributes the power. ''I don't know what we would have done here in the Pacific Northwest in this time of lower power generation had it not been for the Hanford plant," Hurd said. Hydroelectric generation from Columbia River dams has been reduced since July because of low-water flows, and David S. Black, BPA administrator, has said power will have to be imported from British Columbia, California and Utah this winter to meet expected needs. Expectations Exceeded The plant, which began experimental production in the spring, has exceeded the expectations of WPSS officials, Hurd said.

"We have consistently been getting a higher capacity than expected because steam pressures have been exceeding our hopes," Hurd said. Too Bland' Diet Upsets Their Ulcers NEW YORK (AP) Half a dozen ulcer patients at a Bronx hospital left their rooms Thursday to protest on the street for an hour in pajamas against hospital conditions. "The food is bad," said Wil-fredo Castillo, 22. "They give you mashed potatoes ten times a week and one hard-boiled egg with toast, oatmeal and milk every day for breakfast. How long can a guy stand it?" Hospital Administrator Harold Salkind convinced the demonstrators to return to their rooms.

"It was all a misunderstanding," said Salkind, who explained that all ulcer patients receive a special bland diet. "It's the age of demonstrations," said a policeman at the hospital. LIQUIDATION! Drilling stopped this week when a current of air began rushing out of the hole. The current rushes in and out of the hole at different times. Forest Service personnel said the drill may have struck a lava tube running under the lake which has a maximum depth of 50 feet. The tube would have been formed when molten lava continued to flow through a shell of cooled lava. The lake is approximately 80 miles north of Medford.
