John "Jack" Whidden Downie, 92, formerly of Syracuse, N.Y., and Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at his son's home in Virginia, surrounded by his family. Mr. Downie was the son of the late Fred and Georgena Downie and was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Helen M.

Downie and their daughter, Mary L. Short. John Mr. Downie was born in Carstairs, Downie Alberta, Canada, and moved to Everett, as a child. He graduated from Washington State University at Pullman with degree in physics and worked for General Electric in New York state his entire career.

He was on the board of Syracuse Rescue Mission and was a founding member and elder at Eastern Hills Bible Church in Manlius, N.Y. After retiring to Asheville, he attended Arden Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and a member of the choir. He is survived by two daughters, Beth Post of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Debi Ponder of Greer, S.C.; four sons, Fred of Manlius, N.Y., Jim of Herndon of Virginia, Tom of Arlington, and Dave of Asheville; 23 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Louisa Miller of Apache Junction, and a brother, Dick of Fairfax, Va. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m.

Saturday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road in Arden, conducted by the Rev. Ed Graham and Charles Martin. Entombment will follow at Lewis Memorial Park. His family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. RAY HUDSON OGLE HENDERSONVILLE Ray Hudson Ogle, 80, of Crabtree Creek community in Hendersonville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. He and his wife, Elizabeth "Sue" Ogle, were vacationing at the time. Ray loved the Lord.

He was regarded as a dynamic evangelist and Sunday school teacher. He was a true patriarch, both to his family and his church. He is survived by his loving wife and his seven beloved children, Peggy Norris and husband, Jim, Larry Ogle and wife, Geneva, Sue Howell husband, Dennis, Shirley Scott and husband, Jack, Sheila Thomas and husband, John, Sherry King and husband, Tony and Pamela Williams and husband, Chris. He is also, survived by his grandchildren, Norris and wife, Bunny, Marty Norris, Larry Ogle Il and wife, Isabelle, Jamie Worthy and husband, Roger, Lorna Ramsey and husband David, Denise Howell, Cindy Meyers and husband, Ken, Tina Cowart and husband, Chuck, Angie Scott, Jessica King, Amanda King, Taylor Williams and Mitchell Thomas. He has a large number of great-grandchildren an two greatgreat with one way.

Other survivors include sistersin-law Letha Ogle and Maude Ogle and a large number of loving nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving child in the Harkless and Mary Ellen Rhinehart Ogle family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Mae Patton Ogle; brothers, Jim, Richard, Theodore, Willis "Red" and Leonard Ogle; and sisters, Viola Gowan, Florence Moore, Myrtle White and Cora Winkler. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Open Arms Tabernacle Church, formerly Brevard Church of God.

JUDY CANDLER Smith, 57, of 819 went to be with Feb. 19, 2006, Center. A native and Judy Smith McABEE SMITH Judy Gail McAbee Monte Vista Road, her Lord Sunday, at Hospice Solace resident most of her of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of Vivian Kirby McAbee of Oakley and the late McAbee and the of Eugene C. Smith, who went to with the Lord on Sept. 22, 2001.

Mrs. Smith was a 1 Assistant at Candler Elementary School. She graduated from Western Carolina University, Magna Cum Laude, with a B.S. in middle grades education with a concentration in social arts. She was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church in Candler for 25 years, serving as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, AWANA Club leader and member of several other committees.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her daughter, Marsha Smith Bradley and husband, Clifton, of Swannanoa; son, Kevin Eugene Smith and wife, Amy, of Candler; grandson, Logan W. Smith of Candler; sisters, Patricia Dills and Janice Kerley of Candler and Dena Smith of Jupiter; brothers, Bruce McAbee of Conover Kenneth McAbee of Arden; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Todd Cole, Gene King and William LaMore officiating.

23, 2006, at McDowell Hospital. Born in Buncombe County on July 30, 1923, he was a son of the late Tommy Myers and Agnes Holcombe Myers. Mr. Myers was a member of Greenlee Baptist Church. He was a decorated U.S.

Army veteran, having served in World War II, where he was wounded in combat. He later retired as mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. His family will remember him as a beloved husband, father and grandfather. A son-in-law, Wayne Hill and a brother, Glenn Myers, preceded him in death.

Surviving Mr. Myers are his wife, Sallie Henderson Myers, of the home; three children, Walter Myers and wife, Kay, of Marion, Marie M. Hughes and husband, Gary, of Old Fort and Madge M. Hill of Marion; two sisters, Juanita Gaddy of Nebo and Dot Harris of Old Fort. Three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren also survive him.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlee Baptist Church with the Revs. Coy Jeans and Ned Webb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Cherry Springs Memorial Park.

Canton native Rachel Virginia Allison Vollmar, lieutenant commander U.S. Navy, 55, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at her home in Jonesborough, Tenn. Rachel was born Oct. 1, 1950, to Rachel Vollmar Jency Kirkpatrick Allison and R.W.

"Doc" Allison Sr. She was a 1968 graduate of Pisgah High School, a 1972 graduate of Lenoir Rhine College and Grace School of Nursing. Rachel retired from the U.S. Navy on Oct. 1, 1993, following a 25-year career as a Navy nurse.

Since her retirement, Rachel has devoted her life to her son Matthew Christopher Allison Vollmar, his three children, Anastasia Kaylee, Isaiah and Eli and to her daughter, Ashley Virginia Vollmar. Always an animal lover, Rachel also devoted herself to small animal rescue, specifically Yorkshire terriers. She raised and showed Yorkies and was a "Rescue Foster Parent" for the FluffyButts Small Animal Rescue Resort, Inc. Rachel was also an avid genealogist and devoted many years gathering and compiling family lineage. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, Jency Kirkpatrick Allison and R.W.

"Doc" Allison her maternal grandparents, Will and Trula Morgan Kirkpatrick; and paternal grandparents, Charlie and Delena Smathers Allison, as well as a lifetime of FluffyButts who await their mistress at Rainbow Bridge. She is survived by her two children, Matthew Christopher Allison Vollmar and Ashley Virginia Vollmar; three grandchildren, Anastasia Kaylee, Isaiah and Eli Vollmar; sister, Margaret Allison of Canton; two brothers, R.W. "Butch" Allison Jr. and his wife, Jackie, and Scott D. Allison and his wife, Linda, all of Canton; three nieces, Janna D.

Allison, Jency M. Knox and Nathalie V. Knox, all of Canton; nephew, John Allison and wife, Ashlee, of Boone; several aunts and cousins; and her current brood of FluffyButts. Lt. Cmdr.

ERNEST EDWIN DOERSCHUK JR. MUSH Ernest Edwin Doerschuk devoted husband and loving father, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. He was born in Holmes County, Ohio, on Dec. 14, 1914.

Mr. Doerschuk graduated from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, in 1937, served as a cryptographic officer in North Africa in 1942, retired as state librarian of Pennsylvania in 1977 and moved to Leicester-Sandy Mush in 1982. He is survived by two sons, Ernest Ill and Peter; three stepsons, John, Tom and David Rommel and their families; he is also survived by grandson Casey and other nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Zion Church Cemetery, Millersville, Pa. Family services will be in Lancaster, with local services arranged by First Congregational United Church of Christ, Asheville at a later date.

Mr. Gossett was a native of Asheville and a son of the late Sumter Bessie Bradley Gossett. He served in the U.S.

Army and was a veteran World War Il. pot. Gossett served in a variety of functions at James Asheville School for Gossett 55 years and was made an honorary member of Asheville School's class of 1995. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bonnie Price Roberts. Born Madison County in 1 1916, he was the son of the late George Roberts and Cindy Cody Roberts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Roberts and Dewey Roberts and a daughter, Brenda Kay Roberts. Survivors include two sons, Roy Roberts of High Point and Danny Ray Roberts and his wife, Denise, of Thomasville; four daughters, Sue Allison of High Point, Treva Conner and her husband, Robert, of Union Mills, Yvonne Ford and her husband, Raymond, of Thomasville, and Debbie Harper husband, Jeff, of Trinity; 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandchild.

22, 2006, at Mountain Area Hospice. A native of Albany, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Benton David and Ida Remita Stewart Guth. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Leon, who died in December 2005. Over their 64 years of marriage, Anna and Lt.

Col. Larry Leon lived all over the states and world, finally settling in Waynesville. Anna became active in Lions Club and, with her degree as an academic librarian, volunteered with Friends of the Library. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Long and her husband, Brian, of Springfield, and two grandchildren, Sarah E.

Long, of Jackson Hole, and Adrienne Long of Lyons, Colo. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with the Revs. Dr. W.
