ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES THURSDAY, NOV. 19, 1992 Continued from page 4B DEATHSFUNERALS Malcolm X' opening uneventful AP AND STAFF REPORTS The local theater showing "Malcolm planning extra security for the movie that debuted Wednesday, but theater operators in other parts of the state announced no special precautions. The biographical film is set to premiere at 1,200 theaters nationwide. Some areas were preparing for the possibility of violence and beefed up security. Warner Bros, has offered to provide additional security for those theaters who request it Heath Edwards, assistant manager of Beaucatcher Cinemas, said they will take Warner offer and hire security guards for the weekend showings of the movie. The theater experienced no problems during the first showings Wednesday, he said. "If we have any trouble, it will happen Friday or Saturday night," he said. The Asheville Police Department is not planning extra steps for "Malcolm said Capt. Will Annarino. "It's more of an educational movie than something like "Boyz in the Hood" that related directly to gang activity and drugs," he said. "I would be hard pressed to see how anyone could use this movie to incite riots or cause problems." Michael Stevens, assistant manager for the Janus Theater Complex in Greensboro, said he expected large crowds because there are only two theaters in that town showing the film. As for security procedures, Stevens said the Janus complex took no extraordinary actions. "The police in Greensboro already know we're going to have a large crowd, and they'll be patrolling by," Stevens said. Stevens said his theater showed "Boyz In The Hood" last year and experienced no problems from the audience. "The only problem we had last year was a radio promotion where too many tickets were given out and people were sneaking in," he said. The Janus had an early showing of the movie Wednesday to accommodate a class from Greensboro's Dudley High School. Based on "The Autobiography of Malcolm and starring Oscar-winner Denzel Washington in the starring role, the movie traces the minister's life from Harlem to his 1965 assassination.
