Statesman-Journol, Salem, Friday, August 15, 1980 Cheaper than fictional episodes best on tv today fretwork penny-pinchers push 'real life' programs Daytime news Schedule for daytime news: 6:55 7:25 II 8:25 flCD 12:00 OO0D Morning Channel 6. On the CBS prime-time schedule for a mercifully short trial run, this show turns reality into absurdity in its quest for ridiculous occupations for viewers to snicker at. Adding to the general abasement of taste, Bob Barker hosts the program with all the zeal and class of the ringmaster of a Chuck Barris-inspired game show. Trotted out in this episode for our edification ere the all-male Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo dance troupe, a blindfolded sharpshooter and a guy who milks venom from tarantulas. And these are as typical examples as any of television's celebration of the common man and its depiction of real life.

People" can be made for one-fourth of that. Exercising the industry's general contempt for viewers' intelligence and taste, the networks naturally are going to opt for reality. It doesn't matter that particular reality has the same relation to real life as a circus sideshow. The important thing is that it is cheap. AS THE PENNY-pinchers solidify their positions in the network decisionmaking process, viewers are likely to find the present so-called real series joined by the likes of "All-American Pie," scheduled by ABC Sunday night at 8- Slightly less inane that most of the genre, this mildly comic pilot hosted by ex-footballer Joe Namath consists of a collection of oddball situations that people find themselves in during the course of ordinary life.

While a lot of the segments are patently contrived man-on-the-street interviews and speeded-up film sequences some are amazingly and genuinely interesting and downright human. There are looks at the hazardous job of being a driving instructor on the hilly, twisting streets of Youngstown, Ohio; running a Chicago phone answering service; the frustrations of an amateur coach of a New York City juvenile basketball team; and Sunday dinner with a large South Philadelphia family. AS RAGGED AS this hour is, it appears an Emmy Award candidate next to "That's My Line," Saturday night at 8 on By BILL HAYDEN Guinea Newt Service Whether we want it or not and I have the feeling most of us don't commercial television appears determined to inflict its own peculiar version of reality on the viewing public. Despite network claims, such shows as People" and "That's Incredible" aren't on the air because they are celebrations of the common folk. Nor are such series as "Speak Up, America" and the still-to-premiere "Those Amazing Anirials" being added to the prime-time schedules because network programmers have found that real life is much mor fascinating than fiction.

TrfESE SHOWS ARE a celebration of the Accountants taking over deciding what we will or will not see. The CPAs have found that real life is significantly cheaper than fiction. V- w) Rising Sun Records Pkk'of-the-Month 1 JOHN PRINE'S "Storm Windows" By RON COWAN Statesman-Journal Reporter In John Hunsaker's most recent movie role, he played a demented, machete-wielding, mongoloid killer.

And he was killed not once, but twice. Before that, he played a football player-kidnapper in "Cheerleaders' Wild Weekend," a heavy in a "CHiPs" TV episode, the killer of a Mormon leader in "Brigh-am" and the man who devoured a Big Mac for McDonald's. Although he has a mountainous presence at 310 pounds and 6 feet, 6 inches tall, Hunsaker is anything but fearsome. But when casting directors think of him, they don't think of a gentle, funny storyteller. He is always, he says, "the biggie." HUNSAKER, A 33-YEAR-old actor from Hollywood, is staying in Salem between movie roles.

He just finished a 5'-week stint in the dual role of killer brothers in "Just Before Dawn," which finished filming in the Silverton area Aug. 9. And he anticipates a role as a football player in "Pigs vs. Freaks," a television movie that will begin filming here Wednesday. If he does get the second film role, he will remain one of the few movie actors in the country still working during the current strike by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, both of which he belongs to.

311 COMMERCIAL NE DOWNTOWN SALEM Evening Actor John Hunsaker invokes the loony look of his latest film character, the demented killer of "Just Before Dawn." films have made separate agreements that permit production during the strike. Hunsaker; a professional actor for five years, has built his career as a character performer to the point that he is one of the few minor movie actors earning a living wage. His first year he made $1,500 acting and. the next year $2,000, necessitating cab driving and other fill-in work. But, this year, he has had to do odd jobs for only two months.

Of course, that has meant some odd parts. "IF YOU'RE GOING TO be an actor, you have to really shatter your soul," he said, and that goes both for getting a role and playing it the way you have to play it. "You have to have one role you worship the god of thespians." His "Dawn" part cast him as two horribly deformed, non-speaking brothers who slaughter several innocent people. First one brother is shot to death three times, once in the forehead. The second one also is killed, but in an unusual manner that the film producers prefer to keep secret.

HeAs a memorable man, and not just physically. His voice fills a room; his stories fill your interest. But people remember him more for his looks. Sometimes that bothers him. "I think I make the best of my size.

"I WISH I WAS 200 pounds. I never want to be 6 feet." He has been an actor since he was in school. "My father was kind of a comic. He was in vaudeville. "I like entertaining.

I like to tell stories. I like to make them laugh and cry, too." His dream, he said, is to have someone someday turn on television to catch a classic old film. There will be Hunsaker playing some notable character role. He'd like the viewer to say "that was one of the all-time greats." That chance, he thinks, may be coming. "I'm up really tight for a role in the John Steinbeck 'Cannery Row' film." It's a "really, really big super part," he says.

"It's kind of like George Kennedy's 'Cool Hand Luke' part."
