ALL B-10 Mar. 29, 1977 The Arizona Republic TBA tries again to buy Channel 21 VIDEO By MIKE PETRYNI Trinity Broacasting of Arizona (TBA), which attempted more than a year ago to purchase debt-ridden KPAZ- TV (Channel 21), has asked again to be ajlowed to purchase the religious broadcasting statforf, In an emotion-charged business meeting, which some critics said was more emotion-manipulated, the owners of TBA. an offshoot of the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TEN) of Santa Ana, asked KPAZ's bond holders Saturday to substitute their $1.6 million in bonds for TBA bonds as part of a 15 year refinancing plan prior to purchase. Amid several citations of the Lord's will, couple of gospel hymns and one weeping testimonial, TBN-owner Paul Crouch told the bondholders if they consented to a TBA takeover of Channel 21. TRA would assume responsibility for the $1.6 million in bonds and TON would loan the station $270.000 to pay monies owwi on its transmitter (about back taxes ($11,4071.

and mortgages on its building property. Croih-h also pledged $10,000 of his personal funds to help the station get back on its feet. KPAZ, and its owner, Glad Tidings Church, is behind about $800,000 on interest and principal payments on the $1.6 million in bonds, according to Gordon Hutchinson, attorney for the station. In addition, the station was knocked off the air Jan. 19 when RCA Corporation seized its broadcasting transmitter for monies owed.

Under the refinancing plan, seven per cent interest would bo paid on the bonds with payments aiming CALENDAR even' six months the (list tliw nnd monlhly the next 12 years. Under her questioning, Crouch said, in taking over (lie station TRA only has $42,000 in the bank. He also acknowledged to put TUN, instead of TBA. on the line for KPAZ would bo "folly on 1 our jvirts." "They just want to get control so they can raise money over air in tiie Lord's name," she said.

Steven Yarbrough, an attorney for more than 30 bondholders with nearly $400,000 In bonds, said most of his clients would probably go along with the refinancing. Faced with a bankruptcy by Glad Tidings, which has few assets, he said the transfer for the bondholders was a matter of "exchanging nothing for nothing in hopes it might sometime be something." Michael Mastrovito, an attorney for Euel and Cinderella Ballentine, who have filed suit charging that Glad Tidings Church defrauded them of $25,000, said his client will probably proceed with their suit. "The common plight of these people is that they are older and have to be concerned with waiting 12 years to get their money back," he said.
