By KOHr RT I. MADISON CTTLIjOWHEK. April 30. Shortly after I hegan teaching In the Qualla cnmmunity. Jackson county (lB86t, 1 heard for the first time the tradition of Ahraham Lincoln' birth In Wwt ern North Carloina, allegedly in what js now Swain county.

This tradition. I found, had been current in this region for several generations aud was generally believed to be founded upon facts. A number of the most intelligent and reliable citizens gave me. with somewhat varying details, the amazing story of Lincoln's nativity as having taken place in a locality not far from where I was teaching. Among the prominent men w' told and bclieveu the persisting allegations were Captain James Terrell and Messrs.

Ben H. Cathey. Hannibal Knloe. John O. Wallace, W.

Harvey Cooper, and John w. Bird. The last J'O were Methodist ministers. lln substance, the story was that MTicy Hanks, a hired girl, in the home of Abraham Enloe (formerly of Hutheriord county), a farmer then living on Oconalufta river, became encemtp. reputedly by Enloe; that, after the birth of her child, whom she named Abraham, this Hagar and Ishmacl were sent away to Kentucky, where she later married Tom Lincoln.

PulUMied Book On Lincoln One day In the summer of 1887, I wns discussing the plausibility of this legend with one of my student. James Cathey. a brilliant young man, well versed in history, thoroughly grounded in English, fluent in speaking and writing, and equipped with a copious vocabulary "inon which he drew with astonishing ease and phrased with delightful skill, grace, a nd eflert iveness. I suggested that young Cathey collect all available testimony and publish the data and Jngirai conclusions. He responded that he had been deeply impressed by the credibility of the story and that he had already given serious thought to the idea of "writing it but he modestly disclaimed his fitness for the task and expressed the fear that financial and other difficulties attendant upon publishing a bonk were, for him.

practically insurmountable. However. Cathey was intrigued, haunted, and finally possessed by the passible truth of this story of Lincoln's descent from Abra-Vm Enloe; so. for the next five or years, he patiently, persistently gathered his material and hefore 1900 he had published three editions of his "Genesis of Linooln." The book is now out of print. The author died in 1929 tage 62, after a distinguished career as wrtler, orator and legislator.
