If you think money talks, you don't know the half of It. Money shouted at the dinner for the National Arboretum's "Stone-henge." (That's not, of course, the name to be given to the historic columns destined to stand at the Arboretum.) The almost 95-carat pear-shaped Star of the East diamond, once bought by Washington hostess Eva-lyn Walsh McLean for $120,000 and now valued by Harry Winston at $10.2 million, was modeled in the Hanae Mori retrospective of 100 dresses valued at $2 million. Are her dresses then $20,000 each? Wrong.

Some of the gowns shown by the famed Japanese designer cost Those were the ones on which every bead was hand-sewn, as well as hand-dyed. Who pays that price for a single evening dress? You've got me. The dinner at $250 per person at the Madison was devoid of political bigwigs. (Politicians rarely cough up a dime unless it furthers their careers.) It drew Washington's residential blue chip group. Mrs.

George Garrett, who has been most instrumental in getting the 24 Corinthian columns once on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol transported to the Arboretum, bought Hanae Mori gowns for one daughter-in-law and three granddaughters to wear to the dinner! World Wildlife Fund President Russell Train and his wife, who looked smashing in a strapless, black sequined gown, were there; and former aims negotiator Gerard Smith and wife Bernice; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willie Warner and Kathy landscape-architect-lo-the-haut-monde Perry Wheeler; the William FilzGeralds, whose in-town tennis court is the playground of political powers; Ella Burling, who lives in part of the remodeled House that was once Kvalyn Walsh McLean's Mary Belin, whose "Kvermay" estate is the showplace of Georgetown; and the Dillon Rip-leys. Recently in Delhi for Indira Gandhi's funeral, Dillon, who bought the Hanae Mori gown Mary Ripley was wearing, said he had at last discovered how to beat jet lag. Flying lo Asheville Citizen Life Style Clubs Features Monday, Dec. 10, ISM treatment from his family, Michael Reagan didn't even bother to answer the two invitations to sister Patti's wedding he and his wife received.

A second was sent when the first brought no answer. He also didn't ac- -cept invitations to appear beside his father during Ihe campaign and on election night. Hopefully, we've heard the lasUof the so-called neglect of MichaeL The Earl of Westmoreland, former chairman, now director of Sotheby's, was guest of honor at a luncheon given by his Washington hosts, Joan and Maury Tobin and Oalsie and Bob Charles. Westmoreland thinks that what led Alfred Taubman to buy Sotheby's was the electrifying experience of seeing 16 impressionist masterpieces of the Doris Havemeyer collection in one very small room. Sotheby's recently received the late Florence Gould's entire collection of 200 impressionist and post-impressionist paintings which the public hasn't viewed for decades.

They'll be auctioned off in New York in. April for at least $30 million. India one day, spending one day there and flying back the next took care of it! The very social gathering raised enough to pay the $66,000 it cost just to re-crate the columns and move them a short distance to the Arboretum. Of very pale golden sandstone, the columns, designed by Benjamin Latrobe in the early 1900s, are three feet in diameter, 32 feet tall and weigh about 30 tons each. The day after the stunningly-presented fashion show (in which the models stood gracefully erect instead of standing as so many do wiUi shoulder blades and stomachs out) a picture was taken at the Smithsonian of a model wearing both the Hope Diamond and the Star of the East.

When Mrs. McLean wore both, she attached the Star of the East to a small clip on the bottom of the Hope, but the clip was removed when the Smithsonian fell heir to the ill-fated Hope. Not to worry. One of Winston's men shaped a lowly paperclip to hold two of the most priceless diamonds in the world together. Far from getting the distant love is Bob Smith, executive director of the Community Relations Council, said "Phyllis simply lakes the time in her daily life to care, to love and to take on the pain and suffering of others.

Rason Dobbs of Black Mountain, who presented the keynote address on human rights, stressed the need for a constant vigilance in promoting and protecting the God-given human rights bestowed on all of mankind. "The quest for human rights is one that has lo be sought after in our own local communities as well as in other countries," Dobbs said. Other Human Rights Award recipients were Dr. John Holt, Thelma Caldwell, Ken Michalove, W.G. Hutchison, Jos and Betsy Vander-meer and Gladys Forney.

The 7th annual Human Rights Award of the Asheville and Run-combe County Baha'i Communities was presented Sunday to Phyllis .1. Sherrill, compliance coordinator with the Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council. "Phyllis was involved in developing programs and solving problems on her own, in the 1960s, long before agencies and programs were officially established in the 1970s," said Schwandes, paying tribute to the accomplishments of Mrs. Shcrrill. Schwandes also presented a lenglhy list of boards and committees on which Mrs.

Sherrill is serving or has served. The list included Big Brothers and Sisters, YMI, YWCA, Helpmate, Mountainside Teens and the Mediation ('enter. Schwandes said Mrs. Sherrill's grandfather and her high school basketball coach, the late Raymond "Dad" Washington, had been great influences on her development, encouraging her to "be the, best that she could be." "Mrs. Sherrill's work in the community goes far beyond the "9 to 5" work day," as she confronts problems of youth and teens in her neighborhood, finds resources to help a friends or stranger, and provides a compassionate ear and shoulder to help someone through a difficult lime," Schwandes said.

Williams pushes the reset button twice a day. Only once did he go to church on a Sunday morning and get lo push the reset button on time. A neighbor was at his house in minutes. Following his stroke, Williams surprised doctors by not dying, but he was unconscious for several weeks.

He spent a month in the hospital, several months in a nursing home and several more weeks at Thorns Rehabilitation Hospital, slowly relearning to walk, talk, remember facts and regain the use of his right hand. Finally, when he came home, his son came to live for a few months, helping him learn' how to live independently again. The recovery was remarkable. "I'm blessed beyond measure," said Williams, a deeply religious man, who can enjoy listening to his favorite tapes, watch television, visit with neighbors, attend church and keep up with activities of family members. "There are rough places, sure.

There's no prophecy that life will be a bed of roses." Williams started with the Lifeline system more than three years ago, knowing that if he fell or had another stroke, help would arrive shortly. He hasn't had an emergency during that period but neither has he had the worry that he might lie frightened and alone, needing help for hours before help arrived. But today, he sits in the neat and comfortable living room of his loved home and talks about the quality of his life and its many blessings. He apologizes for Ihe slight hesitancy in his speech and for forgetting the name of a nurse from the days of his illness, but any handicaps he has are barely noticeable.

Williams (not his real name) says he is "more than three score and 10 years by far." He lives alone, independently, with the help of good neighborhood friends; a loyal employee who does housework and driving for him and Lifeline. Lifeline is his constant household companion that keeps him in touch with St. Joseph's Hospital emergency response center 24 hours a day. If he should need help in an emergency, he can push the help button on his console machine or on a portable unit he can attach lo clothing and wear around the house. Even if he were not able to call for help.

Lifeline's automatic liming device would soon alert the hospital that he was inactive in his home and help would be on the way.
