What a challenge it must have been to his evangelistic spirit. The Walkers and the Covingtons had stayed on after the disastrous earthquake of December, 1811. A few other hearty souls had joined them. Missouri had been admitted to the Union in 1820, but Pemiscot County was not yet organized nor Caruthersville laid out by G. W. Bushey and CoL John Hardeman Walker—whose grave is now in our church, yard. There was a log building not too far from the present structure that was used for a school during the week and a meeting house on Sunday. Methodists next worshipped in a store building on Third Street not far from the river. What a day it was when they moved into their very own frame church building at the corner of Third and Eastwood in 1881. Three years later Rev. J. K. Matthews met with nine women to establish the first "Air Society," the forerunner of the W.S.C. The congregation got its name from James Eastwood who on Oct. 1, 1854, deeded a plot of ground to the trustees of the congregation, namely i George Bushey, Robert Champion and James Bresswell. As: the town and the church-grew a new brick building was erected on the Ward Avenue plot to 1900 under the leadership of Rev. J. N. Score. • In 1928 during the pastorate of Rev. G. M. Shadwick, the present structure was erected on the lot. This remained as it was until 1954 when an addition known as the Children's Building was added by the Rev. Floyd Brower. This building was dedicated by Bishop Ivan Lee Holt on Feb. 5, 1956. When Dr. Brower was appointed district superintendent, Rev. Martin Niblack was appointed to the pastorate of the 800 member congregation. He joins a long line of faithful and industrial pastors; in addition to Mr. Brower, some will remember Harold Nance, Frances Love, W. L. Meyer, C. C. Barnhart; C. R. Wade, G. A. Shadwick, C, P.
