Mrs. Anthony was born on Aug. 12, 1915, In Madison County and was a resident of Madison County most of her life. She was a member of the Calvary Worship Center. Mrs.

Anthony was a sales clerk for "The Thrift Store" in Marshall for 13 years before retiring in 1978. She was a daughter of the late John Henry and Maggie Stewart Anders and wife of the late Charles W. Anthony who died in 1988. Mrs. Anthony was preceded In death by a son, John Howard Banks a grandson, Chris Nix, and sisters, Pauline A.

Roberts and Frances A. Allen. Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Sue A. Goldsmith and her husband Ernest of Marshall; a son, C.W. Anthony and his wife Connie of Banner Elk; a sister, Henrietta A.

Rector of Marshall; grandsons, Tim Goldsmith and his wife Amanda of Marshall, and Mark Goldsmith and his wife Stacie of Asheville; and great-granddaughters, Krystal Nicole Goldsmith, Kayla and Lauren Goldsmith. Funeral services will be held at 1 1 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Worship Center with the Rev. Ronald Dodson officiating. Burial will be at Bowman-Rector Cemetery.

McKINNEY NEWDALE S.D. McKinney, 74, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Sherbert Day and Florence Evangeline Hall McKinney. He was an Army sergeant and squad leader during World War II and fought in three major battles in Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Surviving are his wife, Winnie Wilson McKinney; daughter, Marcia McKinney of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Vickie McKinney of Prestonsburg, two grandchildren, Chad and Amber McKinney of Prestons'burg; a special great-great-nephew, Kristian Huskins; a special niece, Brenda Ledford and her family, all of Newdale; two sisters, Jeanette Howell of Newdale and Wil-ma Cornwall of Spruce Pine; two brothers, Charles McKinney of Raleigh and William "Bill" McKinney of Newdale; and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday In Faith Fellowship Church. The Revs. David Gillespie and Frank Wyatt will officiate.

OLLIS NEWLAND Bonnie Hollman Ollis, 75, of Whltaker Branch Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, In a Banner Elk hospital. A native of Avery County, she was born on May 31, 1924, to the late Ed and Lucretia Parker Hollman and was preceded In death by her brothers, Howard, Jake, Coyd and Fred Hollman, and by her sisters, Lottie Fisher and Dora Warren. BOnnie was a lifetime homemaker and mother. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Ollis of Frank; daughters, Teresa and Junior Carver of Frank, Margie and Lynn Carter of Minneapolis and Bonita and Ike Taylor of Spear; a son, Allen Ollis of Mauldin, S.C.; and grandchildren, Angie and Bobby Lunsford of Frank, Steve and Chantee Carver of Frank, Rick Carver of Frank, Grant Carter of Boise, Idaho, Ryan Carter of Raleigh, Peyton and Joshua MacDonald of Spruce Pine, Dustln Taylor of Spear. Bonnie was very proud of her two great-grandchildren, Abby and Connor. Funeral services for Bonnie Ollis will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev.

J. Max Smith and her son-in-law, The Rev. Junior Carver officiating. Interment will follow in Whitaker Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

28, 1999, at a local hospital. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Guy and Edna Haney Anderson. Her husband, William, preceded her in death. Before retirement, Mrs. Dear was the director of communications at Lutheran Hospital of Maryland.

She moved to Asheville In 1 993, and was a past president of the residents' council for Brentwood Nursing Home. Mrs. Dear is survived by two daughters, Dianne Herrick of Asheville and Rosemary Dear of Baltimore; brother, Edward Dear of Baltimore; and sister, Eileen Kalb of Louisville, three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m.

at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with interment following in Green Hills Cemetery. Pastor Mark Nieting will officiate. Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. VERNA MAE HARRIS ASHEVILLE Vema Mae Edwards Harris, 65, of 413 Balrds Cove Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999.

Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 23, 1934, In Buncombe County where she had lived all of her life. She retired from National Linen Service. Mrs.

Harris attended Long's Chapel Baptist Church and Baird's Cove House of Prayer. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Elmer Harris; daughters, Ann Ingle, Debra Shelton Verna Mae Harris and April Riddle, all of Weaverville, and Pamela Talley of Asheville; sisters, Louise McMa-han, Judy Watts and Nina Lunsford, all of Asheville, Mavis Higglns of Weaverville; brothers, Rick Edwards of Asheville and Sam Edwards of Weaverville; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday In the chapel of West Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Roberts officiating.

CURTIS CARVER CANTON Curtis Lee Devlin "Cookie" Carver, 73, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Haywood Regional Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Bryan H. and Pearl Pressley Devlin.

Surviving are her brothers, Carrol Eugene Devlin of Canton and Charles K. Devlin of Lenoir; sisters, Judy Russell and Betty Worley of Canton and Inez Dixon of Hendersonville. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at CrawfordRay Memorial Gardens. The Rev.

ALMA P. SUMMEY CANTON Alma Phillips Sum-mey, 61, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Blue Ridge Health Care, Asheville, after an extended illness. A native of Yancey County, she had lived most of her life in Haywood County. Her mother is Guynia Phillips of Burnsville.

Her father was the late Clyde Phillips. She is also preceded in death by a son, Tony McKinney. She was formerly a beautician. She was a member of Elkshoal Baptist Church in Burnsville. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of 30 years, James W.

Summey of Canton; a daughter, Cynthia Reavis of Canton; sons, James Junior Summey of Canton and Dennis McKinney of Bakersville; a sister, Judy King of Candler; a brother, Kenneth Phillips of Burnsville; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 1 a.m. Friday in Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Gene King will officiate.

BROWN ASHEVILLE Amanda Vaughn Brown, 91, formerly of the Asheville Terrace Apartments, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Brown was born In Polk County and was a daughter of the late Emory M. and Ida Stone Vaughn. She was married to Frank D. Brown, who died in 1948, and was employed by Farmer's Federation and by the I Dell School.

She was the oldest living member of Deaverview Baptist Church and was a member of Amanda Brown the Ladies Bible Class. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon B. Norton of Candler; two sons, David L. (Jack) Brown of Asheville and Bob E. Brown of Candler; two sisters, Ruth V.

Staffon of High Point and Viola Brendle of Marion; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Patton Avenue chapel of Grace Funeral Home with the Revs. Lee Roy Denton and Tom Pierce officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.

Radford, 89, of Cook Creek Road, Murphy, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in a local hospital. He was a native of Cherokee County. He was a farmer and had also worked in construction and with the TV A. Mr.

Radford was the son of the late Gary Oscar and Callie Nina Davidson Radford and was preceded in death by his wife Julia Lee Dockery Radford, who died in 1983, and a son, Veil S. Radford, who died in January 1999. He is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Ruby and Joe Price of Clyde, Joyce and Jack Carr of Douglasville, and Hazel and Roger Smith of Locust Grove, a daughter-in-law, Mabel Worley Radford of Murphy; four brothers, Willard Radford of Murphy, Junior Radford and Hoover Radford, both of Gasto-nia, and Sherrill Radford of College Park, two sisters, Violet Allen of Oklahoma and Jerlene Wood of Goose Creek, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Judy Brookshire, Teresa Close, Jennifer Gilbert, Douglas Radford, Mark Carr, Timothy Smith, Randall Carr and Sheila Thompson; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 1 a.m. Friday, Oct.

1 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Michael Close and the Rev. Glenn Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery, Murphy.

Friday in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. MARY BELLE BYRD HENDERSONVILLE Mary Belle Byrd, 96, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Park Ridge Hospital.

Born in Albemarle, she was a daughter of the late John F. Pennington and Prudence Hopkins Pennington and was married to the late James Arthur Byrd, who died in 1992. She was a longtime resident of Henderson County and a member of Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was also a teacher with the Seventh-day Adventist Schools in North and South Carolina for 35 years and retired from Asheville-Pisgah Elementary School in 1964. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph A.

and Dixie Byrd of Hendersonville; two brothers, Martin Pennington of Albemarle and Golden Pennington of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Angie Ward, Jason Byrd, and Sarah Byrd; and a great-granddaughter, Haley Ward. 28, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Born on May 27, 1916, she was the daughter of Jeff and Minnie Grindstaff King. Mrs. Buchanan was preceded in death by her husband, Tyson James Buchanan. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her daughter, Lolita L. Buchanan; granddaughter, Beth Buchanan Davis and her husband Taffy, grandson, Bobby Peeler and their father Bob Peeler; great-grandson Cole Buchanan Peeler; sister, Estella Young of Burnsville and Peggy Mae Silver of Oak Ridge, brother, Fred King of Spruce Pine; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Burke County to the late Charlie and Annie Mae Mull Farr, she was a retired employee of the American Thread Co. and a member of Nebo First Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher for 44 years.

She was the wife of the late Ernest Hugh Buff. Surviving are three sons, Olis Hugh Buff of Marion, Jack V. Buff and J. Dean Buff, both of Nebo; a daughter, Ruth Buff Pierson of Nebo; a sister, Ollie Metcalf of Morganton; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 a.m.

DOLLIE SPARKS CANTON Dollie Vardin Sparks, 90, of Canton, formerly of Candler, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in Athens, Ala. Born in Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Zimary Rogers and Clarisa A. Fish Sparks. Survivors include sisters, Jane Dungan of Louisville, and Stacey Heaton of Decatur, and a brother, Andy Sparks of Stuarts Draft, Va.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Jarvis Teague will officiate.

Jane Mosley, an advocate for transportation safety and health issues, died Tuesday night at the age of 54 after a nearly three-year battle with breast cancer. Mosley, D-Wake, died at her home in Cary, said her husband, Jerry. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in late 1996.
