In another five years, it will have been 100 years since a 27-year-old Scot, Alexander Graham Bell, a speech teacher working with deaf Mohawk Indians, heard a sound come over a wire. He was surprised because at the time he was trying to improve telegraph equipment as well as devise a hearing aid for his hard-of-hearing sweetheart. Bell came to London to demonstrate his telephone to Queen Victoria. He rigged a line up the steeple of Bow church where, for a penny, a Londoner standing on the ground could say, "How do you do?" to another in the belfry. Londoners weren't impressed.
