Obituaries Dixon NINA MARY (ROBERTS) DIXON Nina Mary (Roberts) Dixon, 90, Ottawa, died Friday, Sept. 1 8 2009, at Vil- 1 a Plaza, 0 ta wa. Cremation is planned with no services at this time. She was born Wednesday, Dec.

25, 1918, at Wichita to John Orson and Alma May (Palmer) Roberts. She lived in Wichita until she was 4, when she moved to the Garnett area. She also lived in Lawrence soon after her marriage. She moved to Ottawa in 1956. She attended rural schools in her elementary years and graduated from Garnett High School in 1940.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Union Chapter No. 15, Order of the Eastern Star, both of Ottawa. She was a homemaker. She worked as a press operator for Sunflower Ordnance Plant from 1951 to 1953. She married Melvin L.

Dixon Friday, March 12, 1954, at Lamar, Mo. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29,2006. Survivors include sons, Gary Dixon, and his wife, Terri, and Larry Dixon, and his wife, Janna, Ottawa; four grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra Dixon; a sister, Beatrice Sulouff; and brothers, Virgil Roberts, Orson Roberts and Marvin W.

29, 1924, in Leavenworth County, Kansas, to Thomas Aaron and Laura DeRrow Lee. She grew up in Linwood and graduated from DeSoto High School. During World War II, she worked on B51 planes in Fairfax, Kan. Helen married Elmer Fred Kurtz on July 6, 1946, in Olathe, Kan. They lived in Gardner, moved to Edgerton in 1951 and then to ville in 1969.

She was a machinist at Puritan in Lenexa, King Radio and Sunshine Bakery, retiring in 1992. Helen loved to knit and crochet and was a talented seamsti-ess. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers. She was a great cook and pie maker and made the best homemade rolls. She loved her cats and was a huge fan of Kansas Jayhawks basketball.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, in 1972; her parents; her son, Michael; and siblings, Margurite Herald, Samuel Lee, Kenneth Lee and Doris Kurtz. Helen is survived by children, Laurel Mae Edstrom, and husband, Richard, of Edgerton, Roxana Maxine McCool and husband, Lyle, of Bagley, Iowa, Charles A. Kurtz, and wife, Alice, of Gardner, and Candice Marie Ream, and husband, Duane, of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Family was very important to her, and she will be dearly missed. Graveside services were Sept. 15 at the Buster Cemetery, near Perry. She was born Sept.

11, 1906, at Leavenworth to Arthur and Minnie Trustee Carpenter. She enjoyed raising flowers and plants, crocheting, crafts and cooking. She was a riiember of the North Baptist Church of Ottawa and was baptized Sept. 7,1956. She married Dale Dick July 7, 1928.

He preceded her in death Aug. 21,1964. Survivors include a son. Bill Dick, and and his wife, Lena, Mound City; three grandchildren, David Dick, Martha "Marty" McMillen and Melinda Ulses; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by brothers.

Howey and Mary Ann Dinwiddle. He worked as a carpenter. He married Cristal Headrick at Eldon, May 19,1997. She survives. Survivors also include a stepson, Justin Headrick; his mother, Mary Ann Peterson, and stepfather, Ken, Prattville, his father.

feuerbornfuneral.com and www.ottawaherald.com Kennard ALTAKENNARD Alta Kennard, age 99, of Garnett, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Anderson County Long Term Care Fac i 1 i Garnett, Kan. She was born on Oct. 17, 1909, in Sutton Valley, rural Anderson County, the daughter of Richard and Delia Mae (Hobert) Sutton. She grew up in the area, attending Sugar Valley Counti'y School.

Alta started working in the bakery at Garnett following school to help her family. She then worked at Brummel's; Hatchery; later, she cooked for Mabel Barr at the before working at the City Cafe as a cook. Alta was united in marriage to Elmer William Kennard on Dec. 23, 1933, at Garnett, Kan. This union was blessed with four children.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Garnett. Alta enjoyed quilting, and was a member of the Friendly Circle Club. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Alta enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren. Music was one of her greatest loves and she continued to play the piano or organ at local nursing homes well into her 90s.

Alta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Kennard, on March her son, Norman Kennard; daughter-in-law, Jean Kennard; sister. Alma Woolard; and brother, Raymond Sutton. She is survived by two sons, Melvin Kennard, and wife, Doris, of Garnett, and Lewis Kennard, and Rb-' lena, of Garnett, one daughter, Zella Teter, and husband, LeRoy, of Garnett, daughter- in-law, Irene Kennard, of Burlington, sister- in-law, Ethel Kennard, of PHYLLIS ARLENE O'NEIL Phyllis Arlene O'Neil, age 83, of Wellsville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Olathe Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 19,2009, at Wilson's Funeral Home. Visitation wi'U be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept.

Phyllis (Seyler) O'Neil was born May 18, 1926, in Topeka, the daughter of Charles W.

and Ora Bell (Cramer) Sey-. ler. She grew up in Topeka with her family until moving to the Wellsville area around her middle school years. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1944. She attended the University of Kansas for one year, and on April 19, 1946, she married Frank Glenn O'Neil.

They were married 63 years before her passing. He survives at the home. Phyllis began working at Baker University in 1966. She was the administrative assistant to the vice president of student services until she retired in May 1991. Phyllis loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a loving grandmother and mother and also enjoyed reading, writing, gardening and working with her computer. She will be dearly missed by her family, and those who knew and loved her. Phyllis is survived by her husband of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Marcia O'Neil, son and daughter-in-law. Rick and Colleen O'Neil, and daughter and son-in- law, Janine and Larry Dwyer, all of Wellsville; seven grandchildren; 13 grandchildren with one great-grandchild due in April; one niece and one nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Vallis.
