Frank Baker, associate professor of microbiology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, gave a scholarly ion on Genetic or Biological Determinants of Sex Differences at the October 10, meeting of the Huntingdon Branch of the American Association of University Women.

The meeting was held in the -Huntingdon County Library. This served as the introduction to the year's study: Woman for Self. Dr. Baker was well qualified to speak on the subject since he received his doctorate from West Virginia University in genetics and microbiology. He is a native of Kittannlng and did his undergraduate work at Allegheny College.

He introduced his subject with a short discussion of the dominant and recessive genes each individual harbors. The interest in genetics goes back to prehistoric times as evidenced by carvings found on rocks. With the use of slides, Dr. Baker displayed the various combinations of genes that would produce an albino condition, sickle cell anemia, mongolism, dwarflsm, PKU, St. Vltus' Dance and muscular dystrophy.

He explained that mutations are a change In the genetic material. The chances of our doing something about these hereditary problems are now on our doorstep. Through mass screening and diagnostic testing, opt- Ions are now available to young couples contemplating having a family. There are now a number of genetic counselling centers across the United States with the nearest one in Pittsburgh at the McGee Women's Hospital. Referral to these centers is usually by the family physician.

At the conclusion of his scholarly presentation, Dr. Baker gave each member a compilation of critical questions for discussion dealing with genetic engineering, organ transplants and population control. Miss Elizabeth Donnan introduced her law to the group, Dr. Baker was ompanied by his wife. Other guests present were Mrs, George Kurtz and Miss Betty ton of Bellefonte.
