COURT HEARS DENIAL OF LOAN DEAL BRIBERY Ramon Spector, 39, of 8902 Osceola Morton Grove, the principal defendant in the trial of three men accused of con spiring to obtain fraudulent fed erally-insured home improvement loans, denied yesterday tnat he used forgery and bribery attempts in his operations. Spector contradicted the tes timony of his former secretary, who had said that he had in structed her to forge the signa tures of loan applicants on Federal Housing administration certificates. He also denied that he had offered a savings and loan association official "an envelope" to get him to go along witn Jfus dealings. Spector is on trial with Charles T.

Scott, 599 Sunnyside Elmhurst, and James W. Jacobs, 50, formerly of 6800 Tonty in the federal Dis trict court of Judge Richard B. Austin. The jury trial will resume today. REP.

JUDD, 63, CHANGES MIND, TO RUN AGAIN Minneapolis, May 31 (UPD Rep. Walter H. Judd, Minn. said today he has reversed an earlier decision to retire from politics and will run for reelection to an 11th term. Judd, who had announced in April he wouldn't run again, said today he had "not recognized or properly evaluated certain factors which have now compelled me to change my mind." The 63 year old congressman came here from Washington to announce he definitely would run again in the new 5th district which includes all of Minneapolis, normally a Democratic area.

Judd supporters said more than 5,000 letters and telegrams urged him to continue in Congress. State Sen. Donald Frazier is the Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate irt the district 29 Year Career Began with Statehood BY WALTER TROHAN Chicago Tribune Press Service Washington, May 31 Henry Fountain Ashurst, 87, an un schooled cowboy whose gift of gab transformed him into one of the most colorful performers on the congressional trapeze, died here today. Death came at Georgetown University hospital, where he Ashurst was admitted May 16 after suffering a stroke. Courtly and urbane with a penchant for flowery phrases, Ashurst served in the Senate for 29 years from the beginning of Arizona's statehood until he was defeated in 1941.

Ashurst attributed his upset defeat in a Democratic primary to "Washingtonitis," saying that he became "too much preoccupied with the cosmic realms of statesmanship. The peqple felt that I was too big a man in my own estimation for Arizona." Introduces Court Bill Others attributed his defeat to too much aerial somersaulting on the flying trapeze of legislation. Ashurst had no stomach for many of the New Deal measures he supported, frequently with cyncial epigrams, but he voted almost without exception at the com- mand of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1937 he introduced Roose- velt's plan to pack the Supreme court after delivering a pompous address condemning all proposals to usurp the power of the judiciary, directly or by "indirection, circumloc i tergiversation, and periphrasis." Previously as chairman of the Senate judiciary committee he had denied, time after time, that F.

D. R. had any intention of using "house that Jack built" methods of grabbing power. Ashurst was frank enough to acknowledge himself as an avowed apostle of inconsistency. He did much to kill the bill which he said would never be introduced even after introducing it.

He took a pledge of silence for a month as part of a calculated plan to arouse sentiment against the measure so that it was killed. Attracted by Wit For all his trimming and hauling, Ashurst was regarded with affection by all. He was never alone in Washington gatherings because he attracted those who relished his wit and enjoyed his courtly manners. In his last two years Ashurst repeatedly warned the Senate of the dangerous trend toward totalitarianism and burocratic autocracy. This phase of his inconsistency about measures to which he had given lip service also cost him reelection.

When he was defeated, Ashurst donned striped trousers and a frock coat and made his way up to the capital. A cab driver asked him what he intended to do in defeat. Ashurst replied that he intended to sell apples because for 30 years he had "successfully distributed applesauce in the capitol." "Peace, Joy Comes" In his farewell address to his colleagues, Ashurst described the sensations of defeat. He said: "The first half hour you imagine the earth has slipped from beneath your feet, and that the stars abote your head have paled and faded, and in your heart you wonder what the Senate will do without you and how the country will get along without you. But within another hour there comes a peace and a joy to be envied by the world's great philosophers.

"It is the duty of public servants not grumpily and sourly to accept the verdict of the majority if we are to have a free people; and I joyously accept the verdict of my party. But it would be hypocrisy and pretence for me to say that I do not regret leaving the Senate." His wife, the former Elizabeth McEvoy Reno, died in 1939. Ashurst had lived alone since her death in a Washington hotel. He is survived by a sister, a brother, and a stepson. In 1951 he wrote his friend of 55 years, Sen.

Sam Shortridge who was lying on his deathbed, lines which might have been written of his own passing. "You seem to be quite prepared to enter into that vast realm of peace where the innumerable dwell," Ashurst wrote. "I am sorry that I may not see you again, but I am com forted by the knowledge inn' the roaring of the river, daily growing more distinct to your ears, is a stream whose waters bring you no fear." la FUNERAL DIRECTORY 1 Dependable information, guidance and arrangements are a few of the services offered by the Funeral Directors listed here: LOOP SISSON FUNERAL DIRECTORS 839 S.
