Section 1A CHICAGO TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1970 SEEK TO SHOWDOWN ON TRUCK ACCORD Dissidents Want New National Pact BY JAMES STRONG Negotiations in Chicago's prolonged trucking dispute were stalled yesterday in anticipation of a showdown on the national trucking agreement covering 450,000 teamsters the country. Frank E. Fitzsimmons, acting president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, was awaiting the outcome of final negotiations on a supplementary issue covering New England drivers before calling a meeting in Washing- Frank Fitzsimmons ton of the teamsters' hierarchy, including two top officials from each of 350 local unions. Seek New Negotiations Top teamster officials here said the national agreement will be scuttled and Fitzsimmons will be directed to reopen wage talks. The tentative national agreement was reached April 2 in HERE WE GO AGAIN See the editorial page Washington calling for pay raises of $1.10 an hour and $3 a week in pension and health-welfare benefits over the next 36 months.

Teamster leaders are anxious to persuade Fitzsimmons not to mail out ballots for ratification of the tentative national agreement in the belief that it would be resoundly rejected. Higher Rate Asked Here Much of the drivers' dissatisfaction stemmed from demands made in by eight teamster locals and the independent Chicago Truck Drivers union involving 50,000 drivers. The unions are demanding, and in some cases have already signed, a new three year contract calling for wage raises of $1.65 an hour and $10 a week in fringe benefits on top of their current wages of $4.15 an hour and $18 a week in fringes. In 1967, the Chicago unions upset the national agreement by holding out for increases in excess of the pact negotiated in Washington and forced Fitzsimmons, who was replacing the imprisoned James R. Hoffa, to reopen talks.

Five major trucking tions here continued to resist mounting pressure to sign contracts dictated by the teamsters and independent 1 union. Joseph Zeno, owner of three local cartage companies, resigned yesterday as a member of the board of the Cartage Exchange of Chicago and signed union contracts for drivers at Mohawk, Superior and Maybrun Cartage companies. 3 CHICAGO AREA GIs KILLED IN ASIA FIGHTING Three Chicago area men were killed in action in recent fighting in southeast Asia, the defense department reported terday. MEMORIAL SET FOR '30s BAND LEADER O'HARE Memorial services for Anderson O'Hare, 75, of 5855 Sheridan a former band leader in the Chicago area who had as many as 42 bands working at one time, will be held 3 p.m. May 3 in the Peoples Church of Chicago, 941 Lawrence av. Mr. O'Hare, who was known as "The Genial Gentleman of the Air," when he and his bands performed on Chicago radio stations during the 1920s and 1930s, died Wednesday in St. Joseph hospital.

Helped Many Musicians During his musical career, which ended in 1941, when he joined the navy, he was instrumental in the early careers of Anderson O'Hare in 1936 several famous musicians, cluding Benny Goodman, Wayne King, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Harry James. His bands played thruout the Chicago area and one of them was the first musical group to perform in the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York. He also held several house records, ing a three-year run at the Hotel Stevens, now the Conrad Hilton hotel, and a stint at the La Salle hotel. Ran Two Night Clubs He also operated two night clubs, the Bali Bali on Rush street, and Husk O'Hare's Coconut Grove at Waukegan road and Dempster avenue. They were destroyed by bombs during union fights in the 1930s.

In 1937, he married the former Vivian La Gren, who had been named Miss Chicago of that year and had won a movie contract with the R. K. O. studios and a job performing with one of 'Hare's bands. After World War II, O'Hare returned to Chicago and set up a business importing novelty shirts and cosmetics which he continued to operate from his home.

He is survived by his widow. Reuther Gets Another Term as UAW Head Atlantic City, April 23 UP) Walter P. Reuther was reelected easily today as dent of the United Auto Workers. He swamped his first opponent in 21 years and set the stage for picking his successor four years hence. Challenger Art Fox, 49, from the Ford local 600 of Dearborn, never was in the race as the roll was called of 3,170 convention delegates representing the UAW's 1.8 million active and retired members.

The unofficial tally gave Reuther 13,609 votes and Fox 220. Fox was accorded only one vote from his home local. Reuther, his 13th consecutive term--his next-tolast one barring a change in the union constitution, which forbids anyone from running after reaching age 65. The union's next convention will precede Reuther's 65th birthday by four months and anyone chosen before 65 may complete the term to which he is elected. Swept in with Reuther were seven vice pesidents on his slate, five of them new.

Of the five, four were elevated from at-large membership on the 26-member international executive board. Canada was given the fifth new vice presidency. Elevation of at-large board members was viewed by many as a step by Reuther to place Douglas Fraser in line for succession and on equal footing with the two long-time vice presidents, Leonard Woodcock, 59, and Dewayne Greathouse, 54. Fraser, 54, was Reuther's administrative assistant for eight years prior to promotion to at-large membership on the executive board by the 1962 convention. Robert Johnston, of Des Plaines, was reelected to his eighth term as director of the UAW region which includes Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.

He received all except 79 of the votes, from the region's 1,249 delegates to the convention. His region is the union's largest in membership, with 135,000 members. SUBURB FEARS WAVE OF FIRES ARE TORCHINGS BY WILLIAM GAINES Chicago Heights authorities fear that a firebug or a group that is trying to harass police and firemen may be responsible for a series of fires that caused an estimated 250,000 damage in the suburb since the first of the year. The latest fire, discovered at p.m. Wednesday and fought by firemen all night, destroyed three buildings. Fire Chief Emanuel Fried estimated the loss at $200,000.

Began in Warehouse The fire started at the rear of a frame warehouse, occupied by M. G. Sons, steel fabricators, at 79 E. Main st. It spread to the old Bonath Opera House at 75 E.

Main owned and occupied by an advertising specialties company, and to an adjoining two-story building at Main and Halsted streets which housed a dance studio and two apartments. High winds spread the fire and hampered the fire fighters. Nine nearby communities sent men and equipment to help fight the fire. Unlikely Condition Chief Fried said an "additive," possibly gasoline, may have been thrown against the rear wall of the warehouse before the fire was set. When firemen arrived, the rear of the building was a mass of flames, he said.

"You don't get a start like that without some Fried said. It was the fourth major fire in less than a month. On March 28, a fire caused $50,000 damage to the Lincoln theater. On April 8, a fire caused $25,000 damage at a Carbrite Manufacturing company warehouse. On April 11, fire caused a $125,000 loss at the Leising Lumber company.

"We think there is a firebug at work or there is some group intent on harassing the fire and police departments," said Lt. Ted Skoronski, the Chicago Heights fire inspector. The fire and police department have stepped up patrols of alleys on the south edge of the business district, where most of the fires have been concentrated. All the fires have started at the rear of buildings, apparently on the outside.
