C. Plans to Rebound By GORDON BEARD BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Colts play their first home game tinder the National Football League's realignment Monday night in unusual role of underdog. Kansas City's Super Bowl champions, undoubtedly simmering after an opening game loss to Minnesota, have been installed as three-point favorites to upend the Colts in the nationally televised contest (ABC, 9 p.m., EDT). During the past 12 seasons, the Colts were seldom underdogs while posting the best record, 112-48-4, in the old NFL. Especially at home, where opposing players sometimes admit to being somewhat shaken by rabid fans.

But while Coach rlank Strain's Chiefs are seeking to rebound, the Colts are hobbled with injuries following an un- 18-14 victory over running back Tom impressive San Diego. Versatile Matte and tight end Tom Mitch- 'ell are out of action with leg hv 1 juries, while quarterback John Unitas limped through practice sessions during the week with a sore knee. Unitas in his 15th season, was tackled twice while attempting to pass against San Diego, but he was struck down hard several just after releasing the ball while completing 15 of 31 for 202 yards. The Colts rolled up 303 total yards, yet touchdown scored their after rookie lone Ron Gardin returned a punt 43 yards to within inches of the goal line. The last of rookie Jim O'Brien's three field goals, from 28 yards with 56 seconds left, won the game.

With Matte out, Coach Don Young Grid Assistant Having Some Career McCafferty may use rookie Norm Bulaich and veteran Jerry fine the baokfield to give Unitas added protection against Kansas City's massive defense. In last week's opener Lenny Dawson of the Chiefs completed 18 of 27 against Minnesota for 164 yards and one touchdown, with wide receiver Otis Taylor grabbing five for 100 yards. Unitas, whose myriad of records includes 266 TD passes and 35,704 yards gained in the air, completed five each in the opener to wide receivers Eddie Hinton and Roy Jefferson. Because of a scheduled conflict with the Baltimore Orioles' baseball team, the game almost was shifted elsewhere until a court decision resolved the issue. The judge's riding, however, forbade the installation of temporary stands which will cut the capacity from 60,238 to 53,911.

If that holds true, the young UCLA assistant is going to have some kind of career as a football coach.

At 33, Vermeil coordinates the offense for the Bruins under one of the most respected coaches in the country, Tommy Prothro. A year ago he served as an assistant under the pro perfectionist, George Allen of the Los Angeles Rams. "It's my firm philosophy that you can gain in quality as a coach by the people you are exposed to," he said. "The finer people you can expose yourself to, the better a coach you're going to be." A former standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant one year under Allen after being an assistant at Stanford for four seasons. "I enjoyed being with the Rams very much," he offered.

"But I'd always had an awful lot of resect for coach Pirothro. When he presented me with the opportunity to join him, I did." With the Vermeil coordinated the club's kicking game. 'I'd have to say I enjoy my job at UCLA he said. "I play a bigger paft on what goes on than I did with the Rams." Minus Mickey Cureton, the Bruins won their first two games with second-half comebacks. Vermeil admits! the team has surprised him, "We're getting performance out of our yoilhg: quicker than I thdughtV- wg would," he back proves that confidence in ourselves, A team that, doesn't have confidence juestipns whether it can win.

Robinson hit his 24th homer after the Orioles had broken a tie on a walk, a stolen base, a sacrifice and a throwing error. The Indians tied it against 20- gaime winner Jim Palmer on Graig Nettles' three-run homer with two out in the ninth. Palmer had pitched perfect ball for the first 61-3 innings. If Dennis gets the opportunity, he can help somebody." George Allen and Tommy Prothro both are winners on the football field.

But they go at it differently. 'Coach Allen approaches every football game from week to week as a Super Bowl. Coach Cleveland 7-4 Prothro approaches the game in direct relationship to the team he's going to play." A native of Calistoga, Vermeil wants to be a head coach the future. "I'd like that some day. With Lester Josephson out indefinitely with a broken jaw and second-year man Larry Smith hobbled by an aggravated hamstring muscle pull, coach George Allen Friday night activated Elijah Pitts. The Rams acquired Pitts, 31, a nine-year member of the Green Bay Packers, from the Chicago Bears this week. The 6- foot-1, 210-pounder was traded to Chicago by Green Bay during the offseason. Smith aggravated a hamstring muscle pull injury against St. Louis last weekend.

To make room for Pitts, Allen put Smith on the move list, which means he is ineligible to play for at least two games. The Rains Sunday must contain the Bills' 0. J. They will try for two in a row Sunday with Superstar Sayers still a question mark. Sayers, defending league rushing champion, has a bone bruise near his left knee and may miss 'the Bears tangle with the Philadelphia Eagles at Northwestern's Dyche Stadium.

One of the mosi elusive run- ners in NFL history, Sayers carried 18 times for only 43 yards as the Bears opened last Saturday night with a 24-16 up-ending of the New York Giants. Sayers' current injury which has hampered him most of the preseason campaign is not related to the right knee injury which required surgery late in the 1968 season. He recovered astonishingly well from that surgery on his shattered knee to lead the NFL in rushing with 1,032 yards last fall, despite the Bears' woeful Sporting Around Continued From Page 45. in 50- yard scoring strike from Graff to Larry Mialik. TCU drove 46 yards after Wisconsin punt and tied the score 14-14 with 1:39 left in the third period when Bobby Davis bulled in from the four.

The Badgers, who lost their opener to Oklahoma last week saw drives to the TCU 25. 13 and 41 yard lines stalled in the final period. Roger Jaeger missed a 34-yard field goal for the Badgers during that period and TCU's John Bishop missed one from the 37. Judy connected on 12 of 22 pass attempts for 168 yards and Graff completed 6 of 15 for 119 touchdown. Taking the opening kickoff, Kern capped an eight play 73 yard drive with a six-yard run on a pass option with the game hardly three minutes old.

After an Aggie fumble, one of three recovered by Buckeye defensive end Ken Luttner, the Buckeys scored on four plays with Brockington capping the drive with a two-yard plunge. The third OSU touchdown came on a 64-yard march in nine plays with Hayden, who pained 89 yards in 14 carries as the game's too rusher, going over from the three. John. "I wouldn't trade you for anyone in this league, and I think you can be the best pitcher in this league. "I love the way you work. You're a heckuva competitor out there. In fact, I've seen a lot of good pitchers around here." Mind you, Tanner was talking about a pitching staff with a 4.63 earned run average.

But he was dead serious. He was thinking about the good arms he saw, and what his new pitching coach, John Sain, would be doing with them. John in (instructional League Sain will be working with Sox hurlers in the Florida Winter Instructional League, and not just young ones, either. Tommy John, for example, a veteran of six full major league seasons and with 70 wins under his belt, wiill be there. Tanner said Sain had a plan designed to make him an even better pitcher.

"I think Tommy can master this, with the arm and the control he has. Johnny will work with him in Florida, then he can go home and work on it. And when he comes to camp he'll be ready, even tho he has a lot of military reserve time to make up." Another Case of Baking Soda Wayne Stewart, New York Jets' 6-7 tight end, is probably the tallest pie expert in New York at making pies, not eating them. He rejoined the Jets a few weeks ago after six months at the Army's Cooks and Bakers School at Fort Ord. "It's like everything else iii the Army," said Stewart, "It's all done by the numbers. They start you with pies.

When the Bears opened last week with their upset of the Hants at New York, Sayers ilayed below par, for him. His most sterling effort was a 15- ard dash which helped set up a Bear score.

"We won't know until Sunday whether Sayers will play," said Bear physician, Dr. Ted Fox. 'But this injury has nothing to do with his surgery-treated right -13 record, worst in the club's istory. Jim Merritt, making his first start since departing with a strained elbow hr a 8 game at San Francisco, pitched the first three innings for the Reds and pronounced himself ready for the play-offs. Tolan's homer, was one of three hits the Reds bunched with an error by Maury Wills to score four runs off loser Don Sutton. Tony Perez doubled and scored the Reds' fifth run in the fifth inning and they added their final run in the seventh. Gullett pitched four scoreless innings before tiring in the eighth when he yielded a two- out homer to Bill Sudakis.
