Special dispatch to Mm Free Press. Monipklisb, Oct. 22. Got Holbrook took the oath of office this morning at eleven o'clock and will transmit his message to the Legislature at three this afternoon. The House have dismissed the Bill pro viding that Schools be supported on the Grand List.

A motion to reconsider has been, made, pending which the House adjourned. New York, Oct. 22. A battle took place on the upper Potomac yesterday, between Edward's Ferry and Leesburgh, which lasted from 9 in the fore noon, until the latest accounts reached us, up to 8 p. m.

The forces engaged were troops in Gen. Stone's division and a large body of rebels, said to be from five to ten thousand strong, under Gen. Evans. The advance of Gen, Stone's army crossed the Potomac in two bodies, one at Edward's Point, obi Sunday sight to to IfarjUad bore, but Immediately retoraed. Tbej ere supposed to number 500.

A despatch received to-day from General Kosecrau. dated Camp Tompkins, tear Gauley Bridge, reports all quiet The Tru'i despatch says general or der has bees jawed requiring the soldiers to be exercised in heavy marching order for one hour daily. Minuter Harvey writes that Portugal bas given us great privileges in the importation of grain. The Times' despatch says there was only a small party of 40 or 50 that crossed to the Maryland shore from Shipping Point, and they were hasty in their movements. Them is not the slightest chance for the rebels to obtain a footing on the Maryland side.

Gen. McCIellao'a headquarters to morrow will be at Bartlett's house near Falls Church. This morning balf a dosen tend cavalry scouts came down the Leesburgh Turnpike to a point three miles above Falls Church and made a brief rcconnoissanee. The Cameron Rifles to day took possession of Annandale, on Little River Turnpike, ten miles west of Alexandria. Our pickets bad been there two days, but bad not encoun.

tered any of the rebel pickets. The World' despatch says indications are that the rebels are in large force in the rear of Fairfax, and reinforcing the rebel army at Leesburgh. Fortress Monroe, Oct. 21. The severe gale which bas prevailed, but is now moderating, bas somewhat retarded the preparations for the great expedition.

Two hundred and fifty men of the Mass. Battalion who were sent out from Newport News this morning for fuel, were attacked by the rebels and stood their ground. The.lst and 6th N. Y. Regiments had bem sent out support them when the steamer left for Old Point.

New York, Oct. 22. The British gun boat Racer has arrived from Halifax. Washington, Oct. 22.

The Harriet Lane arrived from Indian Head last night. She reports that new bat teries have been erected at Matthias PointJ The Freeborn and the Island Belle, in mak ing a rcconnoisance at that point, yesterday, threw some shot into the woods, and the fire was returned by some new batteries of 18 heavy guns. Immediately thereupon the woods and underbrush were cleared away, exposing the batteries to view. Vessels in passing are obliged to hug the Virginia shore, and are exposed to fire from a distance of 4 or 5 miles in doubling that point. No vessel passed down the river last night, and it is not known that any came up.

River men report that the rebels have a number of seme boats and Ions boats con-cealed in creeks and inlets between Acquia Creek and Occoquan Bay, and that they are busy building launches, apparently with a view either to cross into Maryland or to seise vessels coming np. The report needs confirmation. The most reliable accounts from the up per Potomac this morning, state that our troops bad returned to their position in far better order than was anticipated, and held the Virginia side of the Potomac. Philadelphia, Oct. 22.

A fire broke out this morning in the extensive cotton mill of Solomon atManayunk. Loss undoubtedly heavy, but has not been ascertained. Sri Louis, Oct. 22. Gen.
