(P)rece Alanson "Mellie" Dunham, who credited with starting 8 wave of popularity five years ago for the old time dances, illed tonight 1n A docal hospital after an Illness of two weeks. Mellie's rise to national prominence was meteoric.

For 73 years he had lived in the little town of Norway where he was born, farming. making snowshoes, and "fiddling." for the local dances. Mellie Was a great favorite with the townspeople but was almost unknown elsewhere. Then some one in 1925 promoted An "old time fiddlers' contest" at the local armory and Mellie won over a score or more elderly fiddlers. Agents from Henry Ford sought him out and urged him to come to Detroit before the automobile manu- facturer.

After some thought, Mellie agreed, and he wife, Emma, affectionately called Journeyed to Detroit. Mellie charged Ford three dollars for playing program of old fashtoned dance music "that W35 the regular rate for playing out of although Ford offered him much more, Then followed A vaudeville contract which took him and "Gram" through the middle-west and the east. ROBERTS James W. Roberts. well known farmer of this county, died at his home, near Stocksville, yesterday after an Illness five weeks. Mr. Roberta was A member of Refuge Christian church.

near Jupiter. for many years and was active in all church work. He was 74 years of age. He was married twice. his first wife being Miss Julia Bryan who died about 37 years ago.

Roberte, Kansas; and Mrs. E. G. Jarvis, Mars Hill. Mr Roberta second marriage was to Miss Cynthia Allman He 1s survived by his widow and the followIng children by the second marriage: Mrs.

1. A. Morgan, Democrat; Herbert, Lewis. Scoville, Ruby, Myrtle and Jamie Roberta, of Stocksville. Twenty-two grandchildren and three great -grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Refuge Christian church. near Jupiter. The Rev. J. Watson Shockley, pastor First Christian church, Asheville; the Rev.

Robert, Creasman, of Haw Creek; and the Rev. L. R. Williams, of Maiden. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be: Will Black, Rufus Arrowood, Jim Peeke, J. J. Revis. Alton Barrett and Dan Hunter, Honorary pallbearers will be: John Ball, J. R.

Sept. 27, (A') A new representative from Indiana today suggested a way he believes the country can vote on prohibition and yet keep it out of the 1932 presidential campaigns. Samuel B.

Pittengill, Democrat, Indiana, elected to the house last November, issued a statement agreeing that "prohibition is bound to get into" the next campaign. Then he proposed: "That congress this winter adopt 8 resolution for the repeal or amendment of the eighteenth amendment; that the resolution provide that it be submitted for ratification or rejection by conventions in the several states called for the sole purpose of passing this single question, and further that the resolution provide that such conventions be chosen after January 1, 1933." The effect, will be to take the "whole question' out of the next campaign, leaving the issues strictly those of economics. Wounded Officer Slays Man In Card-Game Fight NEW YORK, Sept. 27. (P)---In pistol fight which broke up a card game in the basement of an upper East Side apartment house today, Patrolman Charles Kleine, shot and killed Edward Franklin, 48, the building superintendent, and was himself seriously wounded.

Police said Franklin and his wife and three others were playing cards when a dispute arose over cheating. The policeman was called to settle the argument..
