NOT WHAT HAD BEEN LOOKED FOR. Adverso Opinion Expressed on Nearly All Sides In Commenting on the Action of the Jury--A Feeling That the Verdict 18 Not in Accordance with the Law and the Evidence -Cost of the Famous Trial to Taxpayers. CHICAGO, March Post, commenting upon the Coughlin trial, snys: Daniel Coughin's acquittal at the hands of the second jury that tried him for complicity in the conspiracy to murder Dr. Cronin was the subject of general comment and criticiam in the city. It is not going outside the fact to sny that no verdict ever rendered by a jury in Cook county gave so much dissatisfaction to the majority of the public.

In the comment made on the jury's action, adverse opinion was almost unanimous. Everywhere the same sentiment prevailed. Among all classes of citizens--except perhaps those who for one reason or other are interested in the man who was a prisoner-the feeling seems to be the sume, It is felt that the verdict is not in accordance with the law and the evidence in the case. It. is held that rendition of such 8 verdict cheapens the value of human life in the community and makes the majesty of the law how subservient to a mawkish sentiment, That feeling, reason, duminated the jurors and presided not at their deliberations must be considered.

Teur-blinded mercy, not stern justice, penned that verdict of "Not guilty." Three Jurors Are Suspected. Such is the general feeling with regard to the verdict. Mingled with it is no suspicion of the honesty of the majority of the jurors. It is not charged that the verdict was secured by improper means of any sort. Only one Irishman was on the jury and the record of the deliberations in the jury room shows that he voted for conThere is in the public mind, however, an abiding thought that at least three of the twelve were bound to acquit, and had been put on the panel with that intent.

What influence was used with those three is not yet known. There were ugly rumors afloat. during the trial, aud while none of these materialized into tangible proof of crookedness there still remains a reasonable doubt as to whether the verdict was had solely on the merits of the case. There is 110 proof that any of the jurors tampered with. There are suspicious circumstances.

Even some of the jurors admit this. The facts that transpired during the progress of tho trial, and the comments made there- on, bavo had some effect on the jurors who have learned of these things since their discharge by the court. Was Honest and Upright. That the jurors are sensitive to these conditions is proved by the statement, in which several of them have joined, the effect that Juror Weinberger was, in to their opinion, strictly honest and upright, and that vote for acquittal was the result of his honest opinion, formed solely from the evidence as presented in court. The trial just ended will go down in history as one of the most remarkable of criminal procedures.

1t occupied four months and six days. Some eight hundred and fifty veniremen were examined before the jury was selected. The state and defense together culled 207 witnesses to the stand. The expense to the taxpayers, including the pay of court and police oficials working exclusively on the case, will approximate 825,000. The former trial cost the state more than double this sum.

Decision in the "Sooner" Question. ST. LoUIS, March special to The Republic from Guthrie, O. say's: A decision of the "sooner" question just received from the general land office, causes consternation among thousands of claimholders in the Oklahoma and Cherokee strip.

The decision is in Payne county contest and is that the man crossed the country prior to the opening and even though he not select a claim nor pass near the claim he afterwards took, the fact of crossing uny, portion of the land made hit a "sooner," and he consequently loses his right to take a homestead.
