Grand open at 9 a. m. today. missing "We must be careful when referring to the number of dead," a navy spokesman said, "but we are searching for 24 persons now missing." Earlier, a spokesman for the naval port authority, said 30 persons were believed killed. A navy communique said the naval vessel Ushuaia, a transport ship that was servicing buoys along the channel, and the Rio Five of Argentine Shipping Line collided around 1 a.

m. some 90 miles from the port of Buenos Aires. THE USHUAIA sank immediately but part of the vessel remained above the muddy waters of the shallow channel. The Rio Five was badly damaged but stayed afloat and began rescuing survivors of the Ushuaia, which had 100 persons aboard. Five other ships in the area joined in the search and rescue operations when dawn came.

THE NAVY dispatched two planes and three helicopters as well as two launches and two tugboats to the scene. The Rio Five was enroute to Buenos Aires from Hamburg with a general cargo at the time of the collision. The cause of the accident is not known, port authorities said. The last major accident in the channel was May 11, 1972, when the Liberian oil tanker Tien Chee burst into flames after colliding with the British freighter Royston Grande, killing 82 persons, including everyone on board the British vessel.
