HM BY ALLAN JAKLICH Marketing, with all its planning ahead and anticipating market trends, has produced one surprising failure: Consumerism. It is what Peter Drucker calls "the shame of the total marketing concept." He talked about the failure and opportunity existing in the trend of consumerism in an article appearing in the August issue of Marketing-Communications magazine. Drucker, a business philosopher and professor of management in the graduate school of business, New York university, said the failure to look at business the buyer's viewpoint is the failure of the concept of marketing. Meaningless to Consumer "When I look at our advertising," he said, 'I know perfectly well why the consumer doesn't trust us.

Not because we scream so much, but because we are talking about things that are meaningless to the consumer. Again and again and again I see advertising that says, 'Our clever, ingenious engineers have suspended the laws of gravity to bring you a pocket "Well, let me say that the housewife ain't no engineer, thank God, but she has been 30'4 Janeway iu HarlCarter 204 83.8 39 373i people, rather than to change conditions so that they can help 21J4 15 3i 28 '4 6'e Sunday, Janeway advises taking out mortgage on home rather than paying cash. Excitmcnt of Initiative Consumerism is the opportunity of marketing, he said. Most major ghettos in the country now are getting what blacks call "concrete plantations" resident plants of large corporations. These are token plants. They're not reshaping the black economy. The black community must develop a strong commercial class. Statistically, the black man's failure entrepreneurially has been far more serious than his failure as an employe.

They have extraordinary potential. Her idea of new work in the ghetto is important to break the lethargy in the ghetto and to improve the balance of payments with regard to the rest of the community. I would also like to see ghetto businesses that lend themselves to franchise supporthotels, gas stations, and restaurants. Franchises and assured markets, if they're guaranteed for a period of time, have a reasonable chance of making it. Also, loans will come easier.

For instance, in Rochester, N. Eastman Kodak has set up a ghetto-owned business that repairs cameras, guaranteeing to turn over to this organization so many cameras a year at $2.50. So the marketing problem is solved for a certain period. The tax incentives that I propose would promote black capitalism rather than "concrete plantations." Whites can help by using their ability to purchase, to franchise, to give entrepreneurial training and, above all, to supply money. Yet it is less important for the white man to share his wealth than his well-guarded secret of how he grows rich.
