Jolley Dell Porter, ne Jasch. Sept. 26. 19M. ONCE I STAYED in a New York hotel during a business convention.

There were a goodly number of prodigals wandering around in their cups, as rootless and belief-less as the prodigal son in the far country. Apparently they couldn't really trust themselves when they got a few hundred miles from home. No doubt they were reasonably circumspect at home where their freedom was inhibited by the necessity of preserving their reputations. The essence of the problem was put by a girl of German extraction who came to help with the housework for a few months when our first son was born. On one occasion she fell to talking about the lady for whom she had worked previously.

Evidently the woman's morals were open to question to say the least, and the girl explained it by saying, "The trouble is she doesn't believe That was the truth in a nutshelL We cannot trust ourselves with our own freedom unless we believe something, unless we believe in the values that last as they are revealed in Jesus Christ People who are devoid of stabilizing beliefs can't manage their own freedom. They are like some freighters built in World War II to maintain a supply line in a time of submarine threat They split amidships in heavy seas. The defect was in the internal construction. A ship must be able to ride a storm, but there is no way to- test the construction except in a storm. That is true also in life.

Our ability to ride out moral storms hinges on our interior spiritual construction. It takes the life of freedom in a far country to test inner quality. Test our minds and spirits, Cod, and grant that we may travel thru the testing with quiet courage and with fidelity to the best we know. Amen. A booklet of ''Thlrry Selected Sermons" by Dr.
