Albert Sidney Johnston led 40,000 Confederates in an attack on Union forces headed by generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, camped along the Tennessee river. By late Sunday, April 6, 1862, a decisive Confederate victory appeared in the making, but Union reinforcements launched a determined counter-attack, and the Confederate line gave way.

Gen. Johnston was killed in the first day's action. In later years Grant wrote that Shiloh was a "case of southern dash against northern pluck and endurance. The troops on both sides were Americans."
