The Salina Journal On the Record Friday, December 30, 1988 9 Deaths funerals Longtime Salina fire chief dies WICHITA Julian Edward Travis, who had been a longtime Salina fire chief, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at his Wichita home. He was 84. Mr. Travis was born Oct.

25, 1904, in Wildewood, and grew up on a farm near Elkhart. He had been a Wichita resident since 1969, moving from Mr. Travis Salina, where he retired as fire chief. He was Salina's fire chief from 1937 to 1969. He was a firefighter for 10 years before becoming fire chief and had been a lieutenant in Wichita's fire department.

During his tenure as Salina fire chief, the department tripled in size, three new fire stations were added and the department was one of the few in the country to build their own fire trucks. He was a past master of the Salina Lodge No. 60, held many offices in the York Rite bodies, and was a member of the Salina Consistory and the Isis Shrine Temple. Survivors include a son, Vernon L. of Arlington, a daughter, Ruth St.

Clair of Wichita; a brother, Irvin of California; a sister, Dorothy Percival of Mesa, four grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. The funeral will 2 p.m. Sunday at the Old Mission Chapel, Wichita, the Rev. Faye Graves. Burial will be in the Old Mission Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Salina Hospice. Visitation is at the Old Mission Mortuary, Wichita. Walter Lay COUNCIL GROVE Walter Lay, 85, Council Grove, died Thursday, 85, Council Grove, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Country Club Nursing Home, Council Grove. Mr.

Lay was born Nov. 11, 1903, at rural Enterprise and had been a Council Grove resident since 1966, moving from Wilsey. He was a retired farmer and self-employed carpenter. He was a member of Church of Christ Christian and the Chamber of Commerce, both of Council Grove. His wife, Lottie Kauffman, died March 30, 1988.

Survivors include four sons, Donald of Burdick, Gilbert of Hemet, Rolland of Valley Center and Clinton of Wichita; four daughters, Virginia Wigle of Wilsey, Eleanor Rindt of Salina, and Phyllis Anderson and Laverna Leeson, both of Council Grove; a brother, Elmer of Mineral Springs, a sister, Helen Schultz of Chandler, 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ Christian, Council Grove, Pastor Bob Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Council Grove. Memorials may be made to the church or the Cardiac Care Unit at the Morris County Hospital, Council Grove.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Kendall Chapel, Council Grove. Mary Prusa HOISINGTON Mary Prusa, Hoisington, died Wednesday, Dec. 1988, at the Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. Mrs.

Prusa was born Mary Holechek on March 17, 1894, in Palcice, Czechoslovakia, and had been a year resident of Hoisington, moving from Dubuque. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. John the Evangalist Catholic Church and the St. John Altar Society, both Hoisington. Her husband, Joseph died 1938.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph of Portis, Edward of Hoisington and Alphonse of Claflin; grandchildren; 30 greatgrandchildren; and three greatgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. John the Evangalist Catholic Church, Hoisington, the Revs. Bob Schremmer and Gerald Hammeke officiating.

Burial will in the St. Catherine's Cemetery, Dubuque. A St. John Altar Society rosary will be said at 3 p.m. today and a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

today at the Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home, the Rev. Howard Boswell officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Mr. Orendorff died Tuesday, Dec.

27, 1988, at the Stafford District Hospital, Stafford. He was born Jan. 25, 1902, in Chenoa, and had been a Salina resident since 1925. He was a retired industrial arts and drafting instructor in the Salina school system and a football coach. He helped to start the drivers education program in the Salina school system.

He was master of Boy Scout Troop No. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church for 20 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Faculty Club of Salina, the Retired Teachers Association and the Salina Blue Lodge No. 60. Survivors include his wife, Ina of the home; a daughter, Barbara Robson of 425 Tulane; a sister, Ferne Ramseyer of Fairbury, and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Boys Scouts of America or the First Presbyterian Church. Visitation is at the funeral home. Columbia in Salina, and Charlene Murr of Forney, Texas; two stepdaughters, Maxine Wheeler of Concordia and Jo Ann Clark of Wichita; a stepson, Ivan Ball of Wichita; two brothers, George and John, both of Salina; four sisters, Amanda Johnson, Verbina Jackson and Grace Rogers, all of Salina, and Ruth Brown of Fort Worth, Texas; six grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; a greatgrandchild; and 11 stepgreatgrandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Salina, the Salina Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1432 or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Visitation is at the funeral home. Leonard F. Greenburg MANKATO Leonard F. Green- burg, 79, Mankato, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato.

Mr. Greenburg was born Dec. 22, 1909, on a farm near Formoso, moved to Los Angeles as a child and returned to Mankato in 1979. He was a personnel and labor relations manager at the Knudsen Milk Los Angeles. He was a member of the Cathedral Chapel Catholic Church Parish, Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.

He was past chairman of the Dairy Industrial Relations Association, past president of the Milk and Ice Cream Employees Association, past vice president of the Milk Manufaturing Products Association, San Francisco, past director of the Los Angeles Host Lions Club, and a member of the Personnel and Industrial Relations Association and the Swedish Club of Los Angeles. He was chairman of the Jewell County Council on Aging, past president and on the board of directors of the Area Agency on Aging, Manhattan, past president of the Mankato Lions Club, past president of the St. Theresa's 'Catholic Church Parish Council, vice chairman of the Mankato Housing Authority and a member of the Mankato Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include a niece, Audrey Greenburg of Sepulveda, and nephew, Leonard Johnson of Mankato. The funeral will be 10 a.m.

Saturday at the St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Mankato, the Rev. Vincent LeMoine officiating. Burial will be in the Wallace Cemetery, Jewell. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Henry Idalyn B. Henry, 88, 908 E. Beloit, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Salina Nursing Center. Mrs.

Henry was born Sept. 3, 1900, at Ellsworth. She was a homemaker and a member of the Harmony Chapter No. 2 Order of the Eastern Star and the St. John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold I. of the home; and nephews and nieces. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ryan Mortuary, the Rev. Naomi Strand officiating.

Burial will be in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is at the funeral home. Edith M. Poe GYPSUM Edith M. Poe, 93, Gypsum, died Monday, Dec.

26, 1988, at the Windsor Estates Nursing Home, Salina. Mrs. Poe was born Edith M. Fink on Dec. 28, 1894, in Abilene and had been a Gypsum area resident since 1933, moving from Abilene.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Gypsum. Her husband, George, died in 1971; and a son, Dale, died in 1944. Survivors include a son, Dean of St. Charles, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m.

Friday at the First Baptist Church, Gypsum, the Rev. Gary Douglas officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Dickinson County. Memorials may be made to the church. The Karber Gillum Funeral Home, Gypsum, is in charge of arrangements.

Milton R. Klint HASTINGS, Neb. The funeral for Milton R. Klint, 82, Hastings, was Wednesday at the Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings, the Rev. Robert Mays officiating.

Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery, Wilson, Kan. Mr. Klint died Sunday, Dec. 25, 1988, at the Good Samaritan Village, Hastings. He was born 9, 1906, in Axtell, and had been a Hastings resident since 1958.

He was a grain buyer for the Morrison-Quirk Company and retired in 1983 as grain manager. He also had worked for Colorado Milling and Elevator of Wilson, Rodney Milling Company of McPherson, and the J. Lynch Company of Salina, Kan. He was the past president of Hastings Rotary Club, the Nebraska Grain Dealers Association, the Hastings Grain Exchange, and the Salina Board of Trade. He also was a member of the Mid-West Lodge No.

50 Scottish Rite, the Tehama Shrine, the Lochland Country Club, and the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Marie of the home; two sons, Philip of Denver and Steven of Kansas City, four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Adams County Cancer Society, Hastings, or the charity of the donor's choice. Mary Dawson JENNINGS Mary Dawson, 92, Jennings, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Friendship Village, Jennings.

Mrs. Dawson was born Mary Ogier on April 30, 1896, in Sheridan County, in a sod house. She was a longtime Jennings resident and a homemaker. Her husband, Elmer, died in 1967. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Wood of Jennings and Virleen Blanchard of Grand Prairie, Texas; a son, Elmer of Houston; a brother, Milford Ogier of Colby; two sisters, Ida Selbe and Birdie Childs, both of Hoxie; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a greatgreat-grandchild.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Jennings, the Rev. Dick Near officiating. Burial will be in the Jennings Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m.

to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Pauls Funeral Home, Selden. Luther P. Boom LEBANON Luther P.

Boom, Lebanon, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Smith County Hospital, Smith Center. Mr. Boom was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Bladen, Neb.

He was a retired custodian and a member of the Smith Center Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Survivors include his mother, Anna Boom of Bladen; and two ters, Angeline Zin of Wichita and Hilda Reiher of Red Cloud, Neb. The funeral will 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, the Rev. Arden Roush officiating.

Burial will be in the Sweet Home Cemetery, Lebanon. Visitation will be Saturday at the funeral home. Sister Ermelina Wasinger CONCORDIA Sister Ermelina Wasinger, 85, Concordia, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Nazareth Motherhouse, Concordia. Sister Ermelina was born Dorothy Wasinger on March 22, 1903, in Walker.

She was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 70 years. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on Aug. 15, 1919, when she received her religious name Sister Ermelina.

She made her perpetual vows on Aug. 15, 1924. She taught in grade schools in Schoenchen, Antonino, St. Peters and in Silver City, N.M. She worked at Marymount College, Salina, for many years and was the administrator of St.

Joseph's Home, Abilene, and at St. Ann's Home, Concordia. She retired to the motherhouse in 1966. Survivors include a brother, Anthony of Littleton, nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m.

Burial will be in the Nazareth Convent Cemetery, The Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, is in charge of arrangements. Reinhardt Prediger DORRANCE Reinhardt Predi- ger, 83, Dorrance, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Mr. Prediger was born May 7, 1905, in Barton County, and he had been a lifetime resident of the Dorrance area. He was a retired farmer and rancher. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Dorrance. His wife, Elsie, died in 1976.

Survivors include a son, Gerald of Dorrance; a daughter, Vera Wanek of Russell; two brothers, Fred Shawnee Mission and Leroy of Topeka; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Dorrance, Pastor James Strasen officiating. Burial will be in the Dorrance City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Stiles-Parsons Funeral Home, Wilson, and after 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Gertrude V.

Bower WICHITA Gertrude V. Bower, 76, Wichita, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, in Wichita. Mrs. Bower was born Gertrude Flight on July 22, 1912, in Terlton, Okla.

She was a homemaker. She attended the First Christian Church, Haysville, and was a member of the Sunshine Club, Wichita, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Russell. Her husband, Raymond, died in 1975. Survivors include a son, Donald Deatherage of Kansas; a sister, Darlene Payton of Wichita; six grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m.

Saturday at the First Christian Church, Haysville, the Rev. George J. Lespagnard officiating. Burial will be in the Old Mission Cemetery, Wichita. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be today at the Old Mission Mortuary, Wichita. Vernon 0. Larson TOPEKA Vernon 0. Larson, 71, Topeka, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Larson was born June 26, 1917, in Clay County. He had been a Topeka resident since 1922. He was in the maintenance department of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and later the Kansas Neurological Institute, both of Topeka. He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topeka. His wife, Esther, died in 1972. Survivors include a brother, Delbert of Salina; and two sisters, Eunice DuMars of Orange, Weather and Arlene Janson of Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Topeka, Pastor J.

Glen Sandquist officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation is until the service at the funeral home.

Carl J. Kaspar JENNINGS Carl J. Kaspar, 74, Jennings, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Hadley Regional Medical Center, Hays. Mr.

Kaspar was born Nov. 1914, at Flagler, and had been a Jennings resident most of his life. He was retired from Seal-a-Matic Company, Kansas City, Mo. He had operated a garage in Jennings since 1980. He was a member of the American Legion Post No.

351, Jennings, and the Jennings Lions Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a son, Jerry of Salida, a daughter, Sharon Cox of Raymore, three sisters, Erma Pankaskie of Wichita, Mae Swann of Buena Vista, and Ruth Buchanan of Jennings; a brother, William of Oberlin; six grandchildren; and a greatgranddaughter. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Jennings, the Rev.

Dick Near and Pastor Richard Zimmer oficiating. Burial will be in the Big Timber Cemetery, rural Jennings, with American Legion Post No. 351 military rites. Memorials may be made to the Jennings Clinic. Visitation will be from 8 a.m.

Pagenkopf HERINGTON Melvin A. Pagenkopf, 72, Herington, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Herington Municipal Hospital. Mr. Pagenkopf was born May 14, 1916, in Nashville, and had lived in Herington since 1918.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Herington, where he was president of the congregation. Survivors include his wife, Elfreida of the home; a daughter, Deborah Reever of Wichita; two sisters, Alice Danitschek of Omaha, and Edna Denney of Irving, Texas; and a granddaughter. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Herington, the Revs. T.G.

Press and Roy Southard officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington. A prayer service will be 7 p.m. today at the Donahue Funeral Home, Herington. Memorials may be made to the church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Dallas D. Hess WAKEFIELD Dallas D. Hess, 66, Wakefield, died Wednesday, Dec.

28, 1988, at the St. John's Hospital, Salina. Mr. Hess was born May 11, 1922, in Washington and had been a Clay County resident most of his life. He was the owner and operator of the Hess and Son's Salvage, Junction City.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Gennett of the home; two sons, Lanny of Clay Center and Rick of Wakefield; three daughters, Donna Birmeier of Leonardville, Vickie Schneider of Las Vegas, and Connie Terrian of Wakefield; two brothers, Cyril Hess of Clay Center and Basil Ellis of Odessa, Texas; two sisters, Marvis Davies of Clay Center and Hope Green of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild. Paulseen, 76, McPherson, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Halstead Hospital, Halstead. Mr. Paulseen was born Oct. 21, 1912, in McPherson and was a McPherson resident most of his life.

He was a carpenter and building contractor. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 24 and Elks Lodge No. 502, all of McPherson. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include is wife, Elva 0. of the home; a son, Ronald of Wichita; a daughter, Virdell Shay of Derby; two brothers, Gordon of Elkland, and LaVerne of Pryor, four sisters, Verna Gradinger, Frances Bughman and Maxine Tillman, all of McPherson, and Betty Cramer of Salinas, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson; the Rev. Wayne Car-: many officiating.

Moore HILL CITY Charlie G. 86, Hill City, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Graham County Hospital, Hill City. Mr. Moore was born April 23, 1902, on a farm near Morland.

He had been a lifetime resident of Graham County. He was a retired farmer and stockman and was active in the Hill City Assembly of God Church, the Northwest Kansas Association of the Visually Impaired and the Polled Hereford Association. Survivors include his wife, Juanita of the home. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hill City Church of God, the Revs.

Jack Gatson and James R. Alexander officiating. Burial will be in the Morland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Graham County Hospital. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m.

Sunday at the Spencer Chapel, Hill City. Alvin J. Vanderlip WOODSTON Alvin J. Vanderlip, 66, Woodston, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 1988, at the Downs Nursing Home, Downs.

Mr. Vanderlip was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Rooks County, and he had been a Woodston resident most of his life. He was a farm laborer and a member of the United Methodist Church, Woodston, and the Veterans. of Foreign Wars, Stockton.

He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include a brother, Eugene of Woodston; and a sister, Mary Vanderlip of Woodston; and nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Woodston, the Rev. Lyle Miller officiating.

Burial will be in Ash Rock Cemetery, near Woodston.
