Sister Mary Jean Huss Mass for Sister Mary Jean Huss, 67, a member of the Carmelite order that 'Chicago's sweetheart' Ruth Etting dies at 82 ging days for several celebrities, including Al Jolson, divorced his wife to marry Miss Etting and became her business manager. THE STORMY marriage lasted 15 years, until 1937, shortly after Snyder was charged with shooting Alderman, who was her pianist at the time, after accusing them of being lovers. Snyder was convicted in 1938 and spent a year in prison before an appeals court reversed the conviction.

During the original trial, however, Miss Etting and Alderman flew to Las Vegas to be married. Alderman died in 1966. Her movie break came in 1927 when she appeared in "Ziegfeld Follies." Besides many other "Follies" pictures, she appeared with Eddie Cantor in "Whoopee" in 1928 and "Roman Scandals" in 1933, and in "Simple Simon" in 1930 and "Gift of Gab" in 1934 with Edmund Lowe and Ethel Waters. Miss Etting was noted for her simple, sentimental songs. Her radio career included "The Oldsmobile Show" in 1934, "Kellogg College Prom" in 1935-36, and "The Chesterfield Show." COLORADO SPRINGS Former movie star Ruth Etting, 82, one of the first "torch" singers in the Ziegfeld Follies and once dubbed "Chicago's sweetheart" when she first sang on radio in the 1920s, died Sunday after a long illness.

A family spokeswoman said the singer, widow of musician Myrl Alderman, died in St. Francis Hospital here. Funeral services were planned for either Tuesday or Wednesday in Colorado Springs, where she had lived for several years. The story of Miss Etting's life was fictionalized in the 1955 movie "Love Me or Leave Me," with Doris Day and James Cagncy." MISS ETTING went to Chicago In 1917 from her home in David City, to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. To help pay for her education, she took a part-time job as a chorus girl in a revue at the old Marigold Gardens.
