THE BAKERSFIELD WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 1939 Stocks Overcome Selling to Finish With Moderate Improvement LEADERS REMAIN ON PLUS SIDE OF LEDGER EW YOR'K A last minute. mark-up gripped the stock market today and at the close leading issues had gained fractions to around a point or more. At the opening there was a mild effort to rally and leading issues piled up gains ot fractions to around a point. Then selling developed to an extent, advances were cut or turned into small retreats and movements became indecisive. Brokers found little in the news to for the various fluctuations, ascribing them to the action of traders in switching here and there in an effort to find some solid spot upon to stand.

Transfers were around 800,000 shares. No group seized leadership at any time during the session although the rails, on the whole, turned in about the best perfortnance. Advances in grain prices provided a cheering note and Wall Street was likewise satisfied with Juno quarter earnings reports which continued, in many cases, to be betior than had been expected.
