HELEN RENARD, Secretory. CHARLOTTE HODEU W. M. mi Noted as Prosecutor in Prohibition Era Circuit Court Judge Leslie E. Salter, 68, whose career in cluded service as an ace government prosecutor in the prohibition era, -V was found dead in bed yesterday morning in his home at 716 Park Floss-moor.

Death was due to natural causes. Judge Salter, Judve Solter elected to the bench in 1953 as a Republican, had served until Jan. 1 in Criminal court. He then was transferred to the law and jury section of Circuit court, where he heard personal injury lawsuits. He had worked on Wednesday and had seemed in good health.

The body was discovered by his wife, Maud, after Judge Salter failed to appear for breakfast. Prosecuted Tax Cases As a federal attorney from 1928 to 1935, Judge Salter had specialized in cases involving income tax evasion and alcohol violations under the Volstead act. He had obtained indictments against such hoodlums as Murray The Camel Humphreys, Hymie Levin, William H. Malone, and Thomas Maloy. In addition he had tried cases against 18 leading night clubs of New York City during prohibition.

These proceedings led to the year-long padlocking of the clubs, and the conviction of 98 club operators and other defendants. Other defendants who were acquitted included Texas Gui-nan 'and singer Helen Morgan. Other cases prosecuted by Judge Salter included the mail fraud trial of Samuel Insull, Chicago utilities magnate, and a kidnapping case in Oklahoma in which George Machine Gun Kelly and Harvey Bates were convicted. Aid to Dwight Green Judge Salter resigned as special assistant to the United States attorney general in 1935. He had served under Dwight H.

Green, later Illinois governor. He also served for a year as assistant state's attorney of Cook county and then entered private law practice. From 1941 to 1948 he was an examiner for the Illinois Commerce commission and from 1949 to 1953 as a master in chancery of the Circuit court. He had served in both the navy and army in World War then returned to the University of Oklahoma. While attending law school, he was elected to the state legislature in 1920 and served two terms the second as Republican floor leader.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Dr. Edwin and Robert, an industrial engineer. A memorial service will be held at 3 p. m. tomorrow in the Community Center Foundation, a religious retreat at Southwest highway and 127th street in Palos Park.

The family announced funeral services will be private. Judge Salter's death brings to 17 the number of Circuit court vacancies to be filled at the November election.
