TIMES Praised As Gallant Soldier Many Die In Viet Fighting Survey Shows Contribution WASHINGTON (AP) Pentagon officials are praising the TM as a hardfighting New figures show that proportionately more Negroes have died in Viet Nam than mil- nary personnel of other races One spokesman said the Negro "has shown himself at least as worthy a fighter as the next man." The Defense Department Wednesday provided figures from what it called a "one-time survey" which showed Negroes suffering a higher number of deaths, proportionately speaking, in the Southeast Asian conflict. SURVEY RESULTS The survey showed that Negroes make up 14.8 per cent of the Army force in Viet Nam but have suffered 18.3 per cent of. the deaths since January 1961.

By the same token, Negroes comprise 8.9 per cent of the Marine total in Viet Nam but have suffered 11.3 per cent of the casualties. When only, enlisted men are counted, Army Negro deaths jump to 22.1 per cent of the total casualties, and the Marines' Negro deaths are upped to 12 per cent. IM31 IN ARMY The survey, reaching 98 per cent of military personnel in Viet Nam at the close of last December, showed 16,531 Negroes in the Army, 3,580 in the Marine Corps, and 500 (5.8 per cent) in the Navy (an estimate based on Negro numbers in the Navy and around the world). The Air Force, using figures available through last September, puts its Negro total in Viet Nam at 908 (8.3 per cent). The Navy reported only one Negro death in Viet Nam in 1961-65, while the Air Force showed none.

NEGRO OFFICERS Of the Army's 1,078 Viet Nam deaths at the end of 1965, 197 were Negro including six Negro officers. Of the Marines' 346 ing two Negro officers. For all services, the number of Negroes figures 10 9.27 per cent, while the deaths average 14.6 per cent. Pentagon officials say they do not consider the number of Negro fatalities high. If the figures show 'anything, one spokesman asserted, "it is the valor of the Negro in combat." NOT SHVGLED OUT Officials emphasized that Negroes are not singled out for hazardous missions in areas.

A mother and father who were slain teft nine children. The policeman, who joined voluntarily in the siege of the suspect while off-duty, was the father of two teen-agers. Police said Sgt. Herman Pec- carelli, shot in the head by Samuel Adams Stout as the officer was about to throw a tear gas grenade into a house where Stout had taken refuge. Peccarelli died later in a hospital.

Stout, who lives in nearby Newark where the slayings were committed, was shot to death by police less than half an hour after Peccarelli was wounded. Stout was wanted in the knife slayings of David Devose, 35, and his pregnant wife, Hildegarde, 30. Their son, Maurice, 12, also was knifed by the assailant and is hospitalized. Newark police said an argument flared in Stout's apartment while he was talking to Mr. and Mrs.

Devose about buying their car. Stout's 81-year-old mother was present. Stout, according to police, grabbed a kitchen knife and slashed Devose and his son. The family retreated to the street The assailant followed and stabbed Mrs. 'Devose.

Shortly after Mrs. Devose's death, doctors delivered her, baby, by caesarian section but the child, a girl, died. Stout returned to his apartment but when police arrived he fled to a neighbor's apartment in nearby Orange. More than 100 police officers poured bullets at Stout's hiding place from behind trees and squad cars. Finally, Patrolman Salvatore Pizzo smashed in a window and fired five times.

After waiting briefly, police burst into the apartment and found Stout dead. combat in Viet Nam a green beret Specia.1 Now his son, Stephen, to join the green But not for vengeance, Stephen says. don't feel mad 'in i any way," the youth said, "I just want to do.mv'part. His prime ambition, he said Wednesday, is to earn the right to wear the green beret, the symbol of the Army Special Forces unit to which his father belonged. "My dad always wanted me to go to West Point," Stephen said. "But I don't have it in me anymore. I just want to prove to dad that if I can't make West Point I can still make it somewhere else. I'm not going to be a bum." Stephen was living with his mother in a house trailer at Fort Campbell, when word came that his father had been killed Jan.
