ISC Hardison Enters Race The Associated Press RALEIGH Slate Sen. Harold Hardison officially entered the race for lieutenant governor Tuesday, saying his support of a state lottery would not cut into his conservative base. "People don't want any more taxes. They've got all they can stand," Hardison, 64, said in an interview after he spoke to hundreds of supporters at a Raleigh hotel. Earlier, he paid his $841 filing fee at the-State Board of Elections.

A native of Deep Hun in Lenoir County, Hardison is an 18-year legislative veteran and currently is chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. A merchant and farmer who founded an oil distribution company, he enjoys strong business and industry support. lie Is one of four major Democratic candidates to succeed Lt. Gov. Bob Jordan, who is forgoing a bid for re-election to challenge Republican Gov.

Jim Martin. Hardison got a nearly five-month head start on his opponents, announcing his candidacy April 23. He was the first to begin serious organizing and fund-raising, and declared himself the front-runner. But he conceded he probably would be unable to get more than 50 percent of the vote, the amount needed to secure the Democratic nomination without a runoff, in the May 3 primary. "Mathematically it's almost impossible," Hardison said, predicting he would be one of two Democrats in a runoff.

In camapaign spending reports filed earlier this month, Hardison said he had raised $530,001. His goal is between $1 million and $1.5 million. Deaths, Funerals The Ashevilli' Citizen, Jan. 27, lMt Area Deaths The Citizen-Times obituary desk is open from 10 a.m. to 30 p.m.
