4C greenvilleonline.com THE GREENVILLE NEWS GREENVILLE BOMBERS REPORT BRAVES REPORT SPURS FROM PAGE 1C All-star roster adds Bombers pitchers 'V they made in Game 6. Together, Duncan and Ginobili scored 33 of San Antonio's 43 points in the second half. The gravity of Game 7 was evident early with anxious fouls, unsettled nerves, desperate defense and wheezing offense. Tony Parker was wobbly enough that Popovich took him out for a 22-second deep breath only three minutes into the game. Both Ginobili and Billups picked up two fouls in the first eight minutes, Rasheed Wallace three by midway through the second quarter.

After 11 ties and nine lead changes, the Pistons nursed a 39-38 lead into halftime; the lowest scoring first half in an NBA Finals Game 7 since the shot clock came in. So the night was tilting toward Detroit. It continued in the third period, when the Spurs missed their first seven shots, and the Pistons' lead swelled to 48-39. But quickly, it was gone. With Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess both on the bench with four fouls, Duncan exploded for 12 points in the period.

Schroyer, who attended San Diego State University, is 3-2 with a 2.22 ERA.

He has three saves. Schroyer, 23, has excelled this month. In 12 innings, he has allowed seven hits an no earned runs. Opponents are hitting .159 against him during that span. The relievers join Greenville first basemancatcher John Ot-ness and third baseman Andrew Pinckney as all-star selections.

this is what great players do. With the Pistons working frantically to win another Game 7 on the road, Manu Ginobili added 23 points, including the killing 3-pointer that gave the Spurs a 72-65 lead with 2:54 left. With Larry Brown in perhaps his final game as Detroit coach, with a team he unabashedly loves, the Pistons were relentlessly bombed into submission. The Spurs took charge in the fourth quarter with 3-pointers from Ginobili, Robert Horry and Bruce Bowen. They made 51 3-pointers in the series, outscoring Detroit 153-54 in that category.

"The goal is to do the little things," Ginobili said the other day. "Numbers sometimes are relative. Especially at this stage. "I don't think that anybody in the whole team cares about that." The Pistons finally gave way as their backcourt finally came up dry. Richard Hamilton had 15 points, Chauncey Billups 13, the two of them shooting nine-for-26.

It was a title that went to the very limit, the two teams tied for the 15th and last time at 59-59 early in the fourth quarter the final period of the long, long season. They were like boxers in a frantic clinch, neither willing to let go. Game 7 was like a pendulum. Back and forth, back and forth. Ginobili's basket put San Antonio ahead to stay at 61-59.

Then came the 3-pointers, one after another after another, a flurry Detroit could not withstand. The Spurs relentlessly pushed the ball in to Duncan, determined not to make the same mistake BAYLOR FROM PAGE 1C coached the Bears to 8-21 and 9-19 records the past two seasons but has a Top 10 recruiting class coming in. "My heart goes out to our players, who are obviously disappointed," Drew said. Many of the ugly details were reported earlier in the national coverage Dennehy's murder attracted in 2003.

The NCAA report had unusually harsh words for the former coaching staff and handed down stiff "show cause" orders to Bliss and his assistants. Bliss was given a 10-year "show cause," meaning any school that wants to hire him the next 10 years must appear before the infractions committee to determine whether the school must limit his activities. Bliss, 61, was clearly the lead villain in the NCAA report. He arranged to pay tuition and ex BUCKNER FROM PAGE 4C Buckner said. "I think nowadays, we're kind of losing kids by the wayside when kids want to be tough.

I want to do the things to correct (their) ways and get (them) ahead in life. I think it takes some positive role models, whether it be athletes or fathers and mothers or cousins to kind of step in their life and kind of guide them into the right direction." At Clemson, Buckner led the Tigers in scoring for four seasons, from 1994 to 1998 becoming the fifth player in ACC history to accomplish the feat. He is also the only Tiger to have been voted ACC Rookie of the Year. A second-round draft pick of the Dallas Mavericks, Buckner was cut by Dallas twice, but each time he made it back to the NBA. He is now entering his seventh season, having played three with Dallas, two with Philadelphia and one with Denver.

"Some guys never get to stick in the NBA, and I've been in there seven, eight years, so that's an accomplishment within itself," Buckner said. This past season, Buckner set career highs for games started (41), points per game (6.2), assists per game (1.9) and steals per game (1.1). He also helped the Nuggets reach the playoffs. "It certainly presents our program with an incredible opportunity and a great challenge," said new coach Skip Holtz, a former South Carolina assistant whose job with the Pirates is his first as a head coach in Division l-A. Files opened in ex-coaches' suit TUSCALOOSA, Ala.

A judge made public a hefty file of documents Thursday as attorneys for the NCAA argued that a defamation suit filed by two former Alabama football coaches should be dismissed. Circuit Judge Steve Wilson unsealed the files at the start of a hearing on the NCAA's motion to throw out the suit filed by former Crimson Tide assistants Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. They claim the NCAA, investigator Richard Johanningmeier and recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper conspired to harm their reputations in an NCAA investigation that led to sanctions against the Alabama football program in 2002. But NCAA attorney Robert Rutherford argued that Cottrell and Williams are public figures and, as such, they have a tougher standard to meet to prove defamation. Rutherford said the Tide assistants were obviously public figures.

pearance. Arizona State (42-25) had won three straight elimination games after losing its CWS opener, including a 6-1 win over Florida on Wednesday. But the Sun Devils' magic finally expired. Arizona had two on with one out in the top of the ninth before Florida reliever Tommy Boss retired the final two batters to set off a Gators celebration. In the fourth inning, home plate umpire Bill Davis called Florida's Brandon McArthur out after a fan reached for the foul ball near the screen.

By Charles Odum The Associated Press ATLANTA Dontrelle Willis pitched a five-hitter to become the NL's first 12-game winner, leading the Florida Marlins over the Atlanta Braves 8-0 Thursday night. Miguel Cabrera hit two homers and drove in a career-high six runs for the Marlins, who were outscored 13-0 in the first two games of the series but used Willis' dominant outing to salvage the finale. Willis (12-2) walked one and struck out seven in his third shutout of the season and fifth of his career.

He stretched his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 19 in his eighth career complete game and fourth this season. Jorge Sosa (3-1) gave up only four hits and three runs in six innings, but two of the hits were Cabrera's 13th and 14th homers. Cabrera added a two-run single off Braves reliever Adam Bernero in the Marlins' four-run seventh inning and an RBI single off Dan Kolb in the ninth. Willis retired 17 straight batters before Andy Marte hit a triple past a diving Cabrera in left field with two outs in the eighth. Willis ended the Braves' only scoring threat when pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit grounded out to first base.

The left-hander threw 113 pitches. Back-to-back shutout losses in the first two games of the series stretched the Marlins' overall streak of scoreless innings to 24, going back to the third inning of Sunday's win at the Los Angeles Angels. Cabrera put a quick end to the drought when his first homer gave Florida a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sosa gave up only one other hit, a fifth-inning single by Paul Lo Duca, before the sixth inning. After Luis Castillo drew a one-out walk, Cabrera drove an 0-1 pitch an estimated 394 feet into the left-field seats for a 3-0 lead.

Cabrera's second homer of the game came on Sosa's 75th pitch. In Sosa's first two starts, he was pulled after throwing 74 and 75 pitches. Willis also helped the Marlins at the plate. With runners on first and second in the seventh inning, Willis laid down a perfect bunt that rolled close to the third-base line. Instead of seeing whether the bunt would roll foul, Marte picked up the ball and threw late to first base as Willis slid headfirst across the bag, loading the bases with the infield hit.

Juan Pierre drove in one run with a fly ball caught by a diving Brian Jordan in right field. Cabrera added a two-run single and scored on Carlos Delgado's double to center for a 7-0 lead. Notes: Cabrera has four multi-homer games. His last two-homer game was April 8 against Washington. With a seventh-inning single, Alex Gonzalez stretched his hitting streak to 13 games, matching his career high.

Before this series, the Marlins had not been shut out in consecutive games since Aug. 23-25, 2000 at San Francisco and against Cincinnati. Florida had not been shut out on consecutive days since April 10-11, 1999, at San Diego and at Los Angles. Detroit San Antonio 16 23 IS 1774 18 20 19 2481 3-Point Goals Detroit 2-14 (Prince 1-4. After Dennehy's murder, Bliss attempted to portray him as a drug dealer to explain how he paid his school expenses. Bliss even gave tape recorders to his assistants so they could practice the lies they were to tell investigators. "They were to rehearse parts, like a high school play," Marsh said. "That's about as bad as it gets." Bliss, who lives in Lakewood, could not be reached for comment. His three former assistants were given "show cause" orders as well, two of them for five years and Rodney Belcher, who came with Dennehy from the University of New Mexico in 2002, for seven years.

One of the coaches, not named in the report, was called by Marsh "the former head coach's bag man." That coach, Marsh said, delivered $900 from Bliss to a player's mother, along with the instructions that she should make three separate $300 checks to the school so it would look like she was covering her son's expenses. said Karl's demanding style is somewhat reminiscent of Barnes. Coach Karl makes it fun at least he did last year.

"I'm not sure if he's gonna be as fun this year, because we've set expectations for ourselves to be a lot higher than what we did last year." Buckner's fondest memory of Clemson is not reaching the Sweet 16 in 1997, or even his game-winning dunk against North Carolina the previous year. He said it was the summer workouts, when the team came together through shared suffering. "All the games that we won and things like that are good, but behind the scenes where you get to come together and become one unit and become great friends is what I really enjoyed about Clemson," Buckner said. Buckner will turn 29 on Sept. 16, and the following day will be inducted to the Hall of Fame at halftime of the Tigers' football game against Miami.

He said it was a nice surprise to learn he was going to be inducted. "That's a great birthday present that I will get, and there's no way in the world that I would miss that," Buckner said.
