Slapshots Pittsburgh Penguins captain Jaromlr Jagr might sit out Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers, after getting hit in the head the last time the teams played. "My head is OK now, so I've got no problem with that," Jagr said after an hour-long workout Monday. "But my neck's still sore. If the game was today, I wouldn't play.

But I'm not sure right now what I'm going to do." He skipped Sunday's NHL All-Star game because of concussion symptoms. A bruising hit forced him to miss the third period of Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Flyers with headaches and dizziness. Wayne Gretzky and Phoenix developer Steve Ellman plan to close on their purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 14, a consultant involved with the deal said. That would be a day before the third deadline set by the NHL and team owner Richard Burke.

Associated Press The injury-depleted Dallas Stars acquired right wing John MacLean from the New York Rangers on Monday. The Rangers received future considerations for MacLean, a 17-year veteran who had been languishing in the minors. Maclean, 36, played only two of New York's first 16 games and the club offered to buy out 80 percent of the remainder of his contract over two years. He wanted the money up front and wound up being sent to Manitoba of the International Hockey League Nov. 15.

MacLean broke into the NHL in 1983 when New Jersey made him the sixth overall pick in the entry draft. Blues' Turek sidelined St. Louis Blues goaltender Roman Turek will be sidelined indefinitely because of tendinitis in his left elbow. The Blues recalled goaltender Dwayne Roloson on an emergency basis from Worcester of the AHL to replace Turek, who reported soreness after his last start Thursday. Turek is 18-9-5 with a 2.22 goals-against average.

He becomes the first Wild captain to serve a second month. In January, the Wild won six games, more than in any other month. "I said it was an honor just be named captain, but to get it on back-to-back months is a great feeling," Bombardir said. "It's nice to see the coaches have confidence and trust in me." The Lightning has given up a league-high 184 goals. Captain and top talent Vincent Lecavalier won't play because of a broken foot.

Also out is veteran defenseman Petr Svoboda (concussion). Tonight marks the Lightning debut of forward Matthew Barn-aby, the bad boy acquired from Pittsburgh last week. The Lightning lost the lone meeting to the Wild. Minnesota's first victory came in a 6-5 game against the Lightning on Oct. 18 in SL Paul.

Tom Jones RECORD: 18-22-8-3, 5th Northwest Wild update: After a six-day break for All-Star Weekend, the Wild plays its fourth consecutive road game. The Wild is 2-0-0-1 on the trip, with an overtime loss at Vancouver in its most recent game. Center Jim Dowd, out the past month because of a rib cage injury, said he was ready to play after practice Monday in Tampa. Right winger Matt Johnson, out the past three weeks because of a concussion and hand problems, also is available. Wild coach Jacques Lemaire said he would decided today if either would play tonight.

Rookie right winger Marian Gaborik is the team's hottest player with a six-game point scoring streak. Look for Manny Fernandez to start in goal. Note: Two points are awarded for a victory; one point for ties and overtime losses. Teams losing in overtime while the goalie is pulled will loss the point for an overtime loss and the result will be recorded in the loss column. DePaul: Named Tonya Mornson men's and women's assistant track coach. Staying or going? The Wild has decisions to make on three veterans eligible to become free agents after the season. Here's a guess as to what might happen with the three: Scott Pellerin: The team's top scorer and leader has been offered a contract and he seems interested in staying. Of the three, Pellerin, 31, is the most likely to be in a Wild uniform beyond this season, but he might be too expensive.

Sean O'Donnell: He's the Wild's most consistent and best defensive defensemaa The Wild would love to sign him, and O'Donnell, 29, is considering it, too. But in the end, he likely will tell the Wild, "No thanks," choosing to return to Los Angeles or New York, near where his fiancee, an actress, can work. Best bet is the Wild will trade him for picks andor prospects. Curtis Leschyshyn: He makes nearly $2 million a year, and the development of rookie Filip Kuba makes Leschyshyn expendable. The Wild likes and respects the job Leschyshyn has done, but he probably makes too much for his age (31) for the Wild to consider resigning him.

Best bet is Wild will trade him for a draft pick. No," Lemaire said. The playoffs still are a stretch. The Wild probably has too many points to make up and too many teams to pass to secure the eighth spot. Then there's the schedule.

Of the 3 1 games remaining in the regular season, 18 are on the road. Plus, the Wild has two games each against Mario Lemieux and the Penguins, the St. Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks. And three each against Dallas and Colorado. "I don't think we're thinking about it either way," Wild goalie Jamie McLennan said.

"It's the old cliche', but it's true: We're taking it one game at a time. Our team battles hard every night, but we never look beyond each night, each game. Most of us don't know who we're playing after the next game. So we're not looking ahead and thinking about anything other than our next game." Risebrough, though, has no such luxury. He has plenty to think about and much to plan during the next three months.

His first order of business is what to do with the three veterans who will be unrestricted free agents after the season: forward Scott Pellerin and defensemen Sean O'Donnell and Curtis Leschyshyn. AH three play pivotal roles and provide invaluable leadership, helping the Wild to the surprising record it has. But Risebrough must consider payroll and the future. He must weigh the pros and cons of winning now, but remain true to his long-range plan. The Wild's unexpected season has forced Risebrough to reconsider some things.

"Performance of the team has always been our focus," Risebrough said. "We wanted to build a strong work ethic and character team and improve along the way. That thinking hasn't changed. Improving is our focus, not the playoffs. If we keep getting better, we'll be happy and if the playoffs happen to come into the picture, then so be it But our thinking has never changed.

We just want to keep getting better." So what would happen if Risebrough had chances to pick up veterans with the cost being the future of the organization?
