Inquiries have been made A9 to whether the city could not do this work as cheaply as individuals, and this was asked yesterday of a city official. He replied in the negative. reason why the city cannot do the work so cheap," said he, "lies in the fact that so many people who are hired by the city to do work for it try to gouge it and charge it far more than they would a private person. Mind you, I am far from saying all do, but some do I know, and An the most barefaced way. I heara of one case in one of the departments where a man put in a bill for $26.50 for doing certain work.

A kick was made on it, but the man stood out that it was right. It was agreed finally that the matter should be submitted to arbitration, and both sides agreed on the arbitrator. "Now, what do you suppose the arbitrator allowed? Why, just $8.50, one-third of the claim-and he said afterwards that really it should not have been more than TRAFFIC BLOCKED BY DERAILMENT The derailment of a freight car on Vaughn's Creek trestle, Just below Tryon, yesterday blocked the track effectively, "delaying all trains several hours. SECURITY A life insurance company should be, and may be, the strongest of financial organizations. be, because its province is to guard the savings of the people; to protect widows and orphans, and to give support to those who are old and unable to support themselves. It may be, because of the uniformity of the workings of the "law of mortality" upon which it is based; because of the fixed scientific principles in accordance, with which it is conducted. because it is protected against the chief perils which are a constant ace to banks, trust companies, and other financial enterprises. There can be no "run" upon an insurance company; and experience has proved that a well managed life company, instead of suffering from a financial panic, can turn it to advantage by prudently investing surplus funds at a time when market values are depressed.

That what should be, and may be, is actually the case, 1x Illustrated in the position attained by the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States -a company whose reputation for financial strength, fair dealing and promptness is world wide. Write, "phone or call. W. J. RODDEY.
