Th French Bread Avenue Macad mixing is to Proceed as Soon as the Money is Paid In-Matters of finance The property owners along French Broad avenue south of Patton avenue want that thoroughfare macadamized, and they propose to back up this" de sire by raising the necessary amount in advance and placing it in the city's hands. The question was one of the topics of consideration by the Board of Aldermen last evening, when City Engineer Lee submitted the estimate that it would require $1570.85 to 'complete the work toBartlett street. The property owners have pledged about $1400 heretofore, and H. T. Collins and W.

Shope thought the remainder necessary would be forthcoming. Under a former order of the Board, the work is to go forward when the money is paid in. City Engineer Lee was instructed to go over the route of the proposed sewer line from W. G. Raoul's property on Charlotte street and endeavor to secure a right of way.

If he does not succeed a Jury will probably be ordered on the line at next meeting. Street Superintendent Bostlc report ed several boles in cement walks where telephone or other poles had been taken' down and the walks allowed to go unrepaired. After April 1, when cement work can be safely done without dan ger from frost, the companies will be ordered to make repairs. The following building permits were granted to A. L.

Melton: For J. V. Brown, eight-room house on south side Pearson's drive; for F. M. Weaver, six- room house on north side Cherry street; for Mrs.

Annie W. Band, seven-room house on south side Hiawassee place. Several petitions asked that A. D. Whitlock be allowed to do a photograph business in the city without license.

Ket erred to the special tax committee. City Engineer Lee submitted his esti mates of cost of sidewalk paving on the north side of Eagle street, $123, and on the east side of Water street between Patton avenue and West College street. $31.40. The assessments were ordered placed in Tax Collector Campbell's hands for collection. Herbert L.

Steele's request -for exten sion of time for the payment of pav- ng assessments was referred to the special tax committee. For the water and sewer committee Alderman Scott reported that if the city had the funds the committee would recommend a sewer for Grady street, but as the funds are not available it will not be put in. In this connection Mayor Rankin suggested that all ex penditures exceptsuch as are absolutely necessary be stopped until Finance Committeeman Jones can report on the condition of things, and this will be fol lowed. R. P.

Walker and others who hold a deed of trust on the C. C. McCarty lot Patton avenue, which was so for paving assessments, asked that they be allowed to pay the installments due and that the city, which bought it. then release the lot. Granted.

The question of employing a compe tent carpenter to put in the frame work at the pump house and also to inspect the stone work at the pumping station was referred to the water and sewer committee and City Engineer Lee, with power to act.
