Miss Mattie Darby left this afternoon for her home in Charlotte. Miss Darby has been teaching at Newton academy. Eldon H. Gore of the staff of the Dally Journal, Rattle Creek, Is here to spend several weeks recuperating. Hicks Beaver of Salisbury arrived last night to superintend the installation of new machinery for the Asheville cotton mills.

Mrs. J. J. Brown. Miss Jeanne Brown and Miss Bessie Bell of Pittsburg have returned from a six weeks' trip, Hctck Ledge, Fla.

DERBY POSTPONED. THE GREAT EVENT NOW BOOKED FOBi WEDNESDAY. Milch to Its regret the! management of the Riverside park races found It necessary to postpone the $500 derby until Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, owing to1 the heavy condition of tha track this morning and the threatening weather; Coldnel Horton Is anxious to have the great event pulled off under Ideal conditions. The postponement will be advantageous to the races in one way, in that Jockey Johnny Grimes will be here to take part Wednesday. He missed the train he Intended to leave Washington on, and would not have arrived In time for the races today, but a telegram from him today says he will be here tomorrow.

Grimes is reputed to be a great Jockey. WANTED WHISKEY. AND GOT IT BY BREAKING OPEN FREIGHT CARS. Last night the seals of seven freight cars were broken open in the Southern yards. The only thing missed from any of the cars was a box of whiskey.

Very soon after the seals were broken it was discovered, and Chief Air Brake Inspector James, who also haa the powers of a policeman, and Captain Jordan captured one Ham Ricker. There were four men, all white, implicated in the Mteft. The only property touched in any the cars was the one box of whiskey, although seven cars were broken open to find the whiskey. IN HIS OFFICE AGAIN. EXPRESS AGENT STATON RETURNS AFTER SICK LEAVE.

Friends of B. F. Staton, who has been absent from his duties as express agent at the office here for the past three months on sick leave, will be glad to learn that he has recovered and resumed charge of the office this morning. Mr. Staton visited In New Orleans and Hendersonvllle during his leave.

While he was away his duties here were attended to by Agent Lee, who will return to Mt. Airy after a visit of a few days In South Carolina. He will leavs Wednesday. DAMAGE ON TRUCK FARMS. A Wilmington special to the Charlotte Observer says: "Truckers from the surrounding country, coming here today told of the serious damage to growing crops from the recent cold weather.
