It's officially being billed as the story's "final chapter," but we suspect that the response at the box office will determine when if? this popular series will end. Women Of Substance Sweet Honey sne slowly sneas By Ian Spelling New York Times These days, the biggest stars shine in some of the most unlikely places. Take, for example, Sharon Stone, blossoming indie queen. Arguably the sexiest screen siren of the 1990s, Stone made her name in the big-budget blpck-busters "Total Recall" (1990) and "Basic Instinct" (1992).

Lately, though, she's been seen most often in far more modest productions, such as "The Mighty" (1998) and last year's "The Muse." Her latest film, "Simpatico," which opens Friday, is another independent feature. What gives? "I believe that these kinds of films, in 10 or 20 years, will have filmic value," Stone said. "I believe that we're actually doing work to be proud of, work that will stand the test of time. With with only five days of filming to go on "Beautiful Joe," Stone's husband, San Francisco newspaperman Phil Bron-stein, had a heart attack. She rushed to his side, and returned to the movie set shortly thereafter.

"Legally I had to come right back to work, and that was horrifying," she said. "I couldn't stand being there every second was just hell." Bronstein has recovered fully. "He's fabulous," Stone said. "He's better than ever." On a note nearly as positive, it's widely believed that Stone will secure an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her comic turn as the flamboyant title character in Albert Brooks' comedy "The Muse." If it happens, she makes it abundantly clear that she'll be more than pleased. "Honey, I want to be nominated for everything," she laughed.

"I want to be nominated for cleaning my house." But there's a serious side to her Oscar bid, too. A nomination would validate her as an artist, not just a box office commodity. "If I can get recognition for my work first, that's more interesting to me," she said. "Yes, I like when movies are hits who doesn't? But it's wonderful to be recognized for your work first." She paused before adding: "I think my work in 'Basic Instinct' holds up today, but I'm still not recognized, today, for my work in that. Maybe when I'm 60.

Well, I'll probably still be threatening. Maybe when I'm dead." said. 'Raging Bull' didn't win an Oscar, and now it's probably considered one of the finest films that's ever been made." Stone will keep appearing on the movie screens. Following "Simpatico," she'll join Woody Allen in director Alfonso Arau's pitch-black comedy "Picking Up the Pieces" and get romantic with Billy Connolly in "Beautiful Joe." She'll also surface on the TV tube, where she'll be costarring with Ellen DeGeneres in "Misconceptions," a segment of HBO's anthology "If These Walls Could Talk 2." The piece was written and directed by DeGeneres' partner, Anne Heche. "It was so much fun because it was all girls, a girl crew, a girl assistant director," Stone said.

Based on a Sam Shepard play, "Simpatico" stars Jeff Bridges as Lyle, a wealthy horse breeder, with Stone as Rosie, his reclusive, alcoholic wife. Nick Nolte plays Vinnie, an old pal of the couple, who's a total lush. When Vinnie decides to right old wrongs and betray long-buried secrets, the trio's Lives are thrown into a life-threatening spiral. Rosie is a highly volatile character, Stone said.

"It's a very dangerous place to live, psychologically." Dark and disturbing Stone credits first-time director Matthew Warchus for providing the emotional safety net required by such a demanding role. "He made it safe for me to go there," she said. Whether audiences go there along with Stone, Bridges and Nolte remains to be seen. The movie is dark, disturbing stuff, and Stone knows it. "People are either enraptured with the movie or they're confused by it," she said.

"They're emotionally torn up by the movie, and they either like that or they don't." And even if they don't like it right away, they may eventually.
