Growing fast Indio is the largest and fastestgrowing city in the valley. Its population is more than 75 percent Latino. In 2004, Indio recorded its highest building valuation in its 75-year history with $487.8 million, up from $268.8 million the year before. City officials estimate the population will swell from about 60,000 to about 130,000 by 2011. "No longer is Indio a small town," Godfrey said.

"We will be a pretty big town, and we need to have management that can handle the complications, the challenges of a larger city," Godfrey said. Wilson said he thinks the city has received about 22 resumes so far. Of those, only one or two were viable candidates, he said. "By using a firm, they are only going to look at candidates that have been city managers in other cities that are people. And those that haven't been, (the head hunter) can weed out right off the top," Wilson said.

Since W'eller is throwing his hat into the ring, Wilson said it helps to have an outside firm helping with the search. "We changed direction a little bit, but I think in the long run we're going to end up with a candidate the city needs to move our city forward in the direction we need to go," Wilson said.
