The Post-Boy, so named because it was delivered by post-riders, appeared in Chester Nov. 8, 1817, almost 60 years ahead of the first issue of the Times. It was a weekly newspaper edited by Steuben Butler and Eliphalet B. Worthington and was printed at the old Colbourn House on Third Street, directly opposite Brown's Hotel. T'he newspaper carried no local news and might just as well have been published in Philadelphia, Boston or New York.

After several months, a single local item appeared. It was about a six-pound eel being caught in Chester Creek by two men identified only as Sutton and Burk. The Post-Boy was sold in 1824 to Joseph M. C. Lescure, who changed the name of the paper to the Upland Union.

The newspaper finally ceased publication Feb. 19,1861. Another early newspaper in Chester was The Weekly Visitor, established in 1828 by William Russell and edited by S. N. Palmer.

But it opposed Andrew Jackson and folded in 1832 when Jackson's victory made its views unpopular. Y. S. Walter bought the printing press and other equipment of The Weekly Visitor and established The has unknown soldier Like Arlington, Delaware County also has an unknown soldier buried in its midst. A veteran of the Civil War, he was buried in the graveyard of the Lima United Methodist Church, Middletown, more than 110 years ago.

A small slab of granite with the inscription "An Unknown Soldier" marks the burial site near an old cedar tree. The grave was discovered many years ago by Thomas P. Kelly, then the registrar of graves in Delaware County, and L. H. Andrews, one of his administrators, during a survey of county cemeteries.

Years of research by the church have failed to shed any light on the soldier's identity, according to Glenn E. Stevick, a church member who has directed much of the research. Delaware County Republican in Darby Aug. 30, 1833. The newspaper followed Whig principles, later changed its name to The Morning Repuublican and was published as a daily in Chester until 1923, when it was bought out by the Chester Times, now The Delaware County Daily Times.

In 1835, the Delaware County Democrat was founded in Chester by Caleb Pierce, who had been one of the city's earliest postmasters. Chester's first daily newspaper was The Chester Evening News, founded June 1, 1872, by F. Stanhope Hill, and ceased publication in 1904.

It was strongly Republican in tone. The Chester Daily Times was founded Sep. 7, 1876, later was changed to the Chester Times and eventually became The Delaware County Daily Times. Besides the Chester Times, the only other daily newspaper Chester has had since The Morning Republican closed in 1923 was The Chester Reporter, which was published as a five- day-a-week daily beginning Dec. 1,1941, following a strike against the Chester Times.
