Key passed away Friday, September 16, 2011 after a brief battle with cancer. To all who knew him he was a larger-than-life character, full of humor, optimism and a powerful love for life.

He started each day with a look in the mirror and the exclamation, "I'm the luckiest man alive!" Eugene was born in Copperhill, Tenn. on March 25, 1923. He earned his Eagle Scout badge in high school, later became a graduate of both Georgia Military College and Emory University School of Law. In WWII he served in the 8th Air Force as a B17 pilot. He served again as a pilot and later in the JAG corps during the Korean Conflict.

After leaving the military he made his career working for Crawford and retiring in 1983. Afterwards, he and the love of his life, Nikey, began traveling the world. Together they went on ten Semester at Sea voyages, multiple People to People tennis exchanges and trips that were often too numerous and varied for even their family to keep track of. Eugene had the enviable gift of making friends everywhere he went, working hard at maintaining those friendships over the years. He was most in his element when entertaining, and loved every chance he had to wear a tux.

He was steadfastly devoted to his family. He even turned family get-togethers into parties with the most memorable being the annual Key Bash. For all of us, family and friends, he will be dearly missed- his spirit has been etched into each of our hearts forever. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Nikey; his children, grandchildren and scores of friends from all walks of life, and from all over the world. It was his wish that there be no traditional services, but, instead, that one last party be held to celebrate his life.

This will take place in Palm Desert later this fall. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in his name to either Semester at Sea or the Palm Springs Air and feel free to lift one last glass of Johnnie Walker Red in his memory.
