Obituaries PACE B6 STAR TRIBUNE FRIDAY, MAY2 1997 Nasal specialist Dr. Kurt Pollak dies; he escaped Nazis Also noted Russell Cleary, 63, a former G. Heileman Brewing Co. executive, died Thursday in La Crosse, after heart surgery. He was Heileman chairman from 1971 to 1987.

Australian brewer Alan Bond bought the company in 1987 for $1.26 billion, and Stroh Brewery Co. acquired it in 1996. Bo WIderberg, 66, a leading figure in Swedish cinema, died Thursday in Stockholm. His most recent Oscar nomination was in 1996, for "All Things Fair" as the best foreign film. But Widerberg is best known around the world for "Elvira Madigan." The 1967 movie was popular for its passion and for its use of classical music, including Mozart's Piano Concerto No.

21 which is now widely called "the Elvira Madigan theme." His previous Oscar nominations, also for best foreign film, were for "Raven's End" (1964) and "Adalen 31" (1969). decided to try to get out of Austria by using his contacts in the underground. So the friend gave his number on the waiting list to Pollak. Pollak was on a boat to Italy when the Nazis came and got his mother. She probably died in a railroad car en route to a concentration camp.

His father, who was a traveling salesman and had been out of town for several weeks, apparently returned home to an execution squad. "We never found out for sure what happened to Kurt's parents. What we know came from Jews who survived," said Pollak's wife, Martha. "We went to Vienna and everything, but we couldn't be sure. That always bothered Kurt" His sponsor in Minneapolis, the late Harry Glickman, got Pollak a job, but World War II was in full throat and he decided to join the Army.

After serving as a supply sergeant in the Philippines and becoming a U.S. citizen, he returned to Minneapolis, where he was reunited with his only sibling, a younger sister named Bertha. (She died in 1946.) Adams, who heads the Ear, Nose and Throat Department. "Kurt was widely recognized for his skill and trained other doctors by giving lectures and demonstrating surgical techniques at other medical schools in the country. "He also was the first to use implanted radium to treat head and neck cancers." Pollak taught and had a private practice in Minneapolis until a severe heart attack in 1970.

But he recovered and for 20 years was chief of the Ear, Nose and Throat Service at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis. And he continued to teach at the university. Heart problems led him to retire in 1990. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Deborah Boughton, of New Brighton; a son, David Pollak, of St. Louis Park, and four grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hodroff Sons Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis. Memorials are suggested to the Minnesota Medical Foundation's Depart-mertt of Otolaryngology. Kurt Pollak was such a well-known specialist at the University of Minnesota that he often traveled to other medical schools to lecture and demonstrate nasal surgery techniques. And he was a pioneer in treating head and neck cancers.

i But Pollak, who died Tuesday of heart problems at age 76 at Abbott Northwestern' Hospital in Minneapolis, almost didn't become a doctor. He missed, by a few days, joining his parents in becoming a( victim of the Holocaust. Pollak had just finished high school in Vienna when Hitler's armies took over Austria. He applied to get into the United States and was approved, thanks to an earlier encounter with a businessman from Minneapolis. Pollak became a pen pal with the man's daughter and she helped find someone to be his sponsor, which was essential in getting a visa.

i. But there was a catch. There was going to be a long wait before his number on the visa list came up for processing. A friend who was much higher on the list Pollak, who had acquired an interest in medicine after coming to Minnesota, enrolled in premed at the University of Minnesota. In his first-semester chemistry class he meet Martha Johnson of Glyn-don, Minn.

He asked her for a date at the end of the term, but almost canceled it when he got his chemistry grade. He had flunked and she had made an A "It nearly crushed him. Here was this guy who could speak five languages English, German, French, Yiddish and Hebrew and he had taken college courses when he was in high school in Austria and he had seen much of the world, and he had flunked. But we went out anyway," his wife said, "and he got over his embarrassment." They got married after she graduated. He finished medical school and did a residency in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and eventually became a rhinolo-gist or nose specialist.

"He was one of the first doctors at the 'U' to specialize in nose reconstruction or functional nasal surgery," said Dr. George Notices And related classifications: To place a paid classified notice call 673-4130; Fax 612-673-4884 242 242 24S Obituaries Funeral Blanchette Ingrid Margareta Blanchette, age 74, of Edina, died peacefully at home on April 1997, after a courageous battle with cancer.
