What is to be gained by giving space to such stuff? which undermines the struc ture of all decent society and destroyes all of our ideals The first answer to such an inquiry must necessarily be: Success in business demands it The newspaper man who ignores the wishes of his patrons might just as well go out of business at once before he is obliged by bankruptcy to do so The people buy a newspaper to get what they consider and the paper which does not contain such news they do not buy Go out among the people today and tell the general reader that he should spend his spare moments in studying up economic ques tions: in looking back upon past history and exploring present conditions that he may' thoroughly familiarize himself with the conditions out of which we have emerg ed and into which we have come that he should fully' un derstand governmental and political workings and know what is best for himself and his neighbor that he should give his time and thought to the cultivation of higher ideals in reading matter etc and the man will probab ly laugh at you He may go on to explain to you that what he wants is not a sermon or a tract or a political essay' but a newspaper telling of the things that men and women doing ami saying good bad and indifferent If he cannot have these things in a paper for which he subscribes he will drop it and take another one which does supply' them We have a few newspaper men in America who rise superior to the morbid taste of the general reader but they' are struggling against fearful odds Talk to men and women about publications called which omit to mention such things as murders and scandals and they will say: Oh yes they are' beautiful papers their tone is so high their language and diction so choice etc but they' will not subscribe for them As a matter of fact they think them useful simply as unatainable ideals so far as the masses of the people are concerned The thing to be borne in mind is that nothing is so fascinating to human nature as man not the ideal man or the airy abstract thing called mankind but just the common every day unvarnished creatures who tread the earth solidly live and work and idle give and spend boost men up or drag them down how they live what they do and say are the' things that the people want to know and in all classes of society from the highest to the lowest There are interested readers of newspapers eagerly scanning the newspapers to find such news and the newspapers themselves in the persons of exchange editors and clipping bureaus that are no exceptions to the rule The desire to know is a universal characteristic of hu manity unconfined by time or condition The advent of the printing press did not bring it Into being but simp ly more fully demonstrated its existence and satisfied its wants Both the desire to know and the means whereby that desire may be met or capable of terrible abuse but curiosity and over publicity find their natural correc tives in each other and in the sound common sense of the average man which is a force too frequently overlooked by' those who are minded to wax hysterical over this that and every evil THE leader of the Indians in the recent attack on white troops is a graduate of an eastern Indian school The Indian is not easily civilized He takes on the ve neer of civilization easily' enough but when he goes back to the reservation he drops it and becomes an Indian as before as did Sitting Bull the best educated and most murderous red skin that ever opened a book or sliced off a scalp lock If the boys and girls educated at the In dian schools could be kept from their old associations they might develop into useful members of society When they go back and find all the sentiment of their friends and tribe against the ideas they learned at school they do not cling to them This is more especially the case with the members of tribes further east the Nevada Indian students are more or less an exception to the general rule TTT JOHN MITCHELL president of the United Mine "Workers is thinking of visiting the west before long in the interest of the great order over which he presides Mitchell is One of the most powerful and successful leaders of labor who has ever appeared in that capacity He Is only thirty three years of age and has risen from the ranks If he should visit the west we hope he will not fail to witness the conditions of mine workers in Ne vada as contrasted with conditions in the eastern States NOT ALWAYS POTENT NEWSPAPER influence is not always potent The press is a great institution and in the long run may impress its belief upon the people though they are at first hostile Unless there is something new or remarkable to be brought into a political campaign newspaper influ ence is less than generally' believed There is ample evi dence of this in New York where newspaper but two in the city' supported Low and the two that support ed McClellan were not among the most Influential of that city The people oppear to have made up their minds to elect McClellan without regard to the newspapers and elect him by a tremendous change from the vote of two years ago Another instance was the election of the Labor candidate for mayor of San rancisco who was opposed by every daily paper in that city PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT has accepted with grateful thanks a fine horse presented to him by Representative Mondlel of Wyoming A short time ago the President re fused a flag which was made for him by a Boston working girl saying that it was unbecoming the Chief Executive to accept presents but it appears that he makes a dis tinction between a flag and a horse Consistency' thy name is not Theodore Roosevelt IT is said that the dismemberment of China by Russia and Japan has commenced although the two nations do not admit that to be the case It was inevitable that China should be partitioned among other nations but it would promise more for the future of the country if the territory was to go into the hands of some other people Russians not sufficiently progressive that the people under her rule may be expected to make great advances EVEN those who do not regard Arthur Gorman with favor as a presidentail candidate are pleased at the re covery of Maryland from the Republicans under his man agement Senator Gorman is a powerful politician a skillful organizer a leader of men and his council and assistance backed by the prestige of recovering his State will be a great aid to the national Democracy HANNA and Roosevelt have come to an understanding Hereafter
