4 COMMUNITY--NORTHWEST HERALD Friday, February 14, 1992 OBITUARIES Roland Ekstrom ELGIN Roland Ekstrom, 70, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1992, at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. A resident of Elgin most of his life, he had been employed by Hawley Products of St. Charles before his retirement. The son of the late John and Anna Pearson Ekstrom, he was born in McHenry on Aug.

15, 1921. He was a member of St. Laurence Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 57 of Elgin and the Independent Order of Vikings. Roland is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Stoffel Ekstrom; four daughters, Suzanne (Dale) Aeschliman of Elgin, Mary Beth (Dan) Wemhoff of Hastings, Karen (Raymond) Klus of Kirkland and Barbara (Jerry) Harrington of Elgin; three sons, Richard (Nancy) Ekstrom of McHenry, David (Sharon) Ekstrom of Ogden, Utah, and Mark (Sandy) Ekstrom of Poplar Grove; 16 grandchildren; and two -grandchildren. A granddaughter, Sara Harrington, two brothers, Richard and Lester, and two brothers in infancy, preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, 14, at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and on Saturday until the time of services. Prayers for the Christian Wake will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, Feb. 15, in the funeral home. The Mass will be said at 11 a.m. at St. Laurence Catholic Church.

The Rev. John Slampak will be the celebrant. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens in West Dundee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or for Masses. James Forkins WOODSTOCK James Walter Forkins, 80, died Tuesday, Feb.

11, 1992, at Sunset Manor in Woodstock. The son of the late Walter and Emma S. (Nelson) Forkins, he was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Batavia. His wife, Jean H.

(Renwick) Forkins, preceded him in death. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin.

Schneider, Leucht, Merwin Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, was in charge of the arrangements. Helen Kaufmann McHENRY Helen Kaufmann, 89, a resident for the past 26 years, formerly of Chicago and Melrose Park, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1992, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born in Chicago on Oct. 28, 1902.

Burial will be private. Mike Kearney MARENGO Mike E. Kearney, 62, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1992, at St. Joseph Hospital in Belvidere.

The son of the late Richard and Elsie (Reichert) Kearney, he was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Rice Lake, Wis. Two brothers, Harold and Pat, also preceded him in death. He is survived by five sisters, Lillian Rusin and Marie Atlee, both of Genoa, Marsella Dillon of Pecatonica, Crystal Lang of Hermitage, and Lucille Bujalski of Fort Lauderdale, a brother, Richard of Genoa; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 14, at Marengo-Union Funeral Home with the Christian Wake service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by the Rev. Philip O'Neil at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb.

15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marengo with burial in the church cemetery. William Stapleton CRYSTAL LAKE William J. Stapleton, 67, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1992, in his home. For many years he had been a lift truck driver for International Harvester prior to his retirement.

Born Feb. 12, 1925, in Elkhorn City, he was the son of the late Ira and Georgia (Cantrell) Stapleton. He is survived by his wife, Reable (Bingham) Stapleton; a son. William (Marilyn) Stapleton; three brothers, James, Hansel and Kenneth, all of Kentucky; and three sisters, Nell Sawyers, Hazel Swieny and Essie Music, all of Kentucky. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 14, at the American Family Funeral Home in Cary. tenant of the Berwyn Police Department and a member of the Illinois Police Association. Born in Chicago on Jan. 10, 1908, he was the son of Henry and Aloisie (Suster) Vydra.

They preceded him in death as did his brothers, Robert and Henry, and a sister, Emily Lusk. Mr. Vydra belonged to the Fox River Grove and the CaryGrove Senior Citizens clubs, the Young at Heart Club of CaryGrove, Ceska Beseda, Sokol of Berwyn, Bedrich Smethana, Odd Fellows Palacky Lodge 630, and the auxiliary of Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington. A dear friend, Bessie Klouda of Fox River Grove, and a sister, Varmilla Rader of Cary, survive. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Kahle-Moore Funeral Home, Cary. The Rev. Robert Baker will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois or the Fox River Grove Rescue Squad.

Howard W. West WOODSTOCK Howard Whitney West, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1992, at Canterbury Care Center in Crystal Lake. The son of the late James E. and Lillian Amelia (Carson) West, he was born on June 23, 1907, in Chicago.

On Dec. 7, 1941, in Chicago, he married Mary Lou Owen. She died on Oct. 9, 1987. In 1936, he graduated from the John Marshall Law School and served in the U.S.

Army Counter Intelligence Corps during World War II. He was a past Commander of the American Legion Advertising Men's Post 38, in Chicago, and the American Legion First Division of Illinois in. Cook County. He served as Chief Deputy Sheriff of Cook County from 1951 to 1955 and was Veterans Employment Officer in Illinois for the U.S. Department of Labor.

He served as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor in Chicago from 1955 until his retirement in 1977. Mr. West was a life member of Amvets, a member of the Woodstock American Legion Post 412, the Woodstock Lions Club and a former chairman of the Republican Party in McHenry County. He is survived by Nanette (Blake) Smith- of Woodstock, Lou Mohapp of Island Lake and many friends.
