m. Interment parents to gather their children's lead playthings and toss them into the neighborhood scrap salvage heap. He said that the poisonings had resulted in the death of six Chicago children during the past two weeks. Several others are known to be seriously ill of the same infection. Fifty-five Deaths In Five Years.

Fifty-five deaths from lead poisoning have resulted during the last five years at Cook County hospital. The number of deaths from the poisoning at other hospitals is not known. Dr. W. p.

McNally, coroner's chemist and toxicologist, reported that the poisoning is started when children, usually between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, put lead toys in their mouths. After the material has been repeatedly placed in a child's mouth, the lead solution gets into the juvenile's blood, from where it goes to bone deposits. In extreme cases, some of the material finally gets to the brain, causing lead encephalitis, a form of sleeping sickness. Difficult to Diagnose. Dr.

McNally reported that it is difficult to diagnose lead poisoning in children. X-Rays of the bones and skull, as well as blood tests, must be made. The poisoning is more quickly recognized in adults, for a blue line on the gum will readily reveal it in them. Dr. McNally Joined Brodie In urging parents to discard toys which may bring death instead of delight to their children.

Leonard HITI Mary Hiti. formerly of Pnllman. beloved mother of the Kev. Maltniaa $3,800,000 MORE FOR CONGRESS STREET SOUGHT Tha city council subcommittee on motor fuel taxes, headed by Aid. George D.

Kells 28th, yesterday recommended the appropriation of an additional $3,800,000 for the acquisition of right of way and legal and engineering expense for the proposed $40,000,000 Congress street superhighway. This would bring the city's total appropriation to $6,000,000. Mayor Kelly, who attended the meeting, urged that the money be set aside now so the way will be cleared for obtaining allotments of funds from the state and federal governments. It is planned to finance the development by obtaining $10,000,000 apiece from the city and county and $20,000,000 of state and federal funds. Clayton F.

Smith, president of the county board, said the county's present appropriation of $3,200,000 soon will be Increased to $5,000,000. Aid. James B. Bowler 25th warned that the city will fight all attempts by real estate speculators to profit on the project by acquiring rights of way and retelling to the city at a profit. The total right of way cost is estimated at $20,000,000 for the project, which will run from Michigan avenue to Austin boulevard.
